The Philosophy of Risk Avoider: From Vulnerability to Resilience
The Reality We Face We live in a paradoxical time. While humanity has achieved unprecedented technological advancements, we have simultaneously become more vulnerable than ever. The distinct line between “Natural” and “Man-made” disasters is blurring. From the sinking streets of Joshimath to the flash floods of urban metros, the message from nature is clear: We cannot negotiate with geography; we must adapt to it.
Who We Are Risk Avoider is not just a digital platform; it is a movement towards Disaster Resilience. Spearheaded by Dr. Piyoosh Rautela, a veteran Disaster Management Professional with decades of experience in the Himalayas and beyond, this platform seeks to change the narrative from “Rescue and Relief” to “Prevention and Mitigation.”
We operate on the fundamental belief that Disasters are avoidable. A hazard becomes a disaster only when it meets a vulnerable population. If we remove the vulnerability, the hazard remains just a natural phenomenon.
Our Mission
- Demystify Science: Geology and Meteorology often remain trapped in academic journals. We break down complex concepts—Plate Tectonics, Cloudbursts, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)—into language that every citizen can understand.
- Institutional Memory: We analyze past tragedies not to dwell on the loss, but to extract life-saving lessons. By keeping the memory of 2013 Kedarnath or 2004 Tsunami alive, we ensure history does not repeat itself.
- Advocacy for Safety: We champion safe construction practices, indigenous knowledge systems, and sustainable development goals (SDGs). We advocate for development that respects ecological boundaries.
What You Will Find Here
- Case Studies: Forensic analysis of recent calamities. Why did the slope fail? Why did the bridge collapse?
- Survival Manuals: How to retrofit your house against earthquakes? What to put in a Go-Bag? How to react during a fire?
- Global Dialogue: Discussions on the DGCCA&DRR (Global Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation & Disaster Risk Reduction) and insights from “The Delhi Platform.”
- The Human Element: Stories of resilience, community leadership, and the brave men and women of the NDRF and SDRF.
The Vision To create a society where “Safety” is a culture, not a compliance checklist. A society where a homebuyer asks about “Seismic Zones” before asking about the “View.” A society that respects the mountains, the rivers, and the oceans.
Join us in this journey. Let us move from being Risk Creators to becoming Risk Avoiders.
