Planned as a prelude to the 6th World Conference on Disaster Management (6th WCDM) scheduled to be organised jointly by Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA), Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) and Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS) between 28 October to 1 December 2023 in Dehradun, a painting workshop is being organised in the campus of the organising partner of the workshop – Graphic Era University (GEU) in Dehradun on 30 and 31 October 2023 to commemorate National Disaster Reduction Day.
Mass awareness is the key for ensuring voluntary compliance of disaster safety measures and reiteration of the risk posed to the masses by various hazards that loom large over their area, highlighting the safety cover that could be provided by adopting various available prevention and mitigation measures brings forth best results.
Mass awareness is at the same time a potent tool for overcoming the impact of both Fading Affect Bias and Positivity Bias that often induce inaction. Mass awareness is thus a tool for overcoming the inertia of inaction and galvanise masses to act positively to be prepared to face the hazards.
Mass awareness thus being the key to disaster resilience, the painting workshop besides providing live exposure to upcoming artists and art enthusiasts, is to draw attention of the visitors towards various issues related to risk reduction and resilience.
Apart from others 24 eminent and accomplished artists are participating in this workshop and apart from others these include Prof. Ram Viranjan, Prof. Sunil Vishwakarma, Prof. Shekhar Chandra Joshi, Col. Bharat Nandan Bhandari (Retd.), Dr. Lakshaman Prasad, Dr Sanjeev Arya, Mr Narsimha Murthy, and Mr Eshwar Pattar.
The workshop was kick started after a brief inaugural session in which apart from others VC GEU Dr. Nripendra Singh, DIG & ACEO USDMA Raj Kumar Negi, DG UCOST Prof. Durgesh Pant, ED USDMA Dr. Piyoosh Rautela were present.
The artists assembled at GEU on behalf of 6th WCDM aim at drawing attention of the masses towards increasing frequency and magnitude of disasters on the wake of changing climate and degrading environment so as to popularise the message of disaster resilience through their work that is to revolve round the following themes:
- Disaster safe Uttarakhand
- Preparedness for disaster safety
- Nature conservation
- Climate change adaptation
- Cooperation and networking for disaster safety
- Technology and disaster safety
- Himalayas and natural hazards
- Traditional practices and disaster risk reduction
- Armed conflict and human sufferings
Large number of students from different educational institutions across the city as also officials of different departments, general public and students and faculty of GEU visited the workshop venue and interacted with the artists to better appreciate the work being created by them.
The workshop is to conclude in the evening of 31 October 2023 wherein the participating artists are to be facilitated and honoured.
The work of the artists is to be utilised for various purposed related to 6th WCDM and exhibited at different forums to bring forth awareness on various DRR issues and ensure disaster resilience.
