The evening was calm and cool.
From their vantage point in Mussoorie, they could see the lights of the Dehradun valley twinkling below like a carpet of scattered diamonds.
The recent, intense experiences with crowds had left a deep impression on Santa. He broke the comfortable silence.
“Banta,” he said, his voice thoughtful.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“We’ve seen two types of terrible things.”
“One was at the bus station, where we were squeezed while standing still.”
“The other was in the bazaar, where people were moving and fell like dominoes.”
“Which one… which one is worse?”
“Which is the more dangerous beast to face?”
Banta looked out at the peaceful valley, contemplating the question.
“That, Santa, is a very intelligent question.”
“You are asking to compare the two faces of the same killer: compressive asphyxiation.”
“They are not two different beasts, but the same beast attacking in two different ways.”
He held up his left hand.
“This is the Crowd Crush.”
“Think of it as a horizontal force.”
“It happens when a crowd is pushed into a confined area, against a solid object—a wall, a barricade, a bus.”
“The pressure comes from the sides, squeezing you until you cannot breathe.”
“The danger is static pressure.”
Then, he held up his right hand.
“This is the Progressive Crowd Collapse.”
“Think of it as a vertical force.”
“It happens when a crowd is moving along a confined route.”
“Someone falls, and the domino effect begins.”
“The pressure comes from above, from the weight of people stacking on top of you.”
“Again, you cannot breathe.”
“The danger is dynamic pressure and vertical weight.”
He brought his hands together.
“So, which is worse?”
“It is like asking if it is worse to be drowned in a lake or a river.”
“The end result is the same.”
“Both are expressions of crowd density and force becoming too great for the human body to withstand.”
“One traps you against a wall; the other buries you under a pile.”
“Understanding both is the key, because the best way to survive a monster is to know all the faces it wears.”
Santa looked at the twinkling lights below, each light a home, a life.
He now understood that the safety of those lives in a crowd depended on respecting the terrifying, simple physics of space and pressure.
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
समझ / Discover: भीड़ में दो तरह की घातक स्तिथियाँ उत्पन्न हो सकती है और दोनों ही जानलेवा सिद्ध हो सकती है / There are two primary scenarios for fatal crowd disasters: the crowd crush and the progressive crowd collapse.
दोनों ही स्तिथियो में दबाव के कारण साँस न ले पाने से मृत्यु हो सकती हैं / A ‘crowd crush’ is characterized by horizontal compressive forces, typically against a barrier. A ‘progressive crowd collapse’ is characterized by vertical compressive forces from the weight of people falling on top of each other. Both result in death by compressive asphyxiation.
विवेचना / Reflect: भीड़ से जुडी इस तरह की दुर्घटनाओं का मूल कारण एक ही हैं – सीमित स्थान में बहुत ज्यादा व्यक्तियों की उपस्थिति / Though the mechanics appear different (static pressure vs. dynamic collapse), the root cause and the ultimate cause of death are the same—too many people in too little space.
उत्तरदायित्व / Responsibility: भीड़ से जुडी इस तरह की दुर्घटनाओं से जुड़ी परिस्थियों को समझना बहुत जरूरी हैं। भीड़ में स्थिर अवरोध के विपरीत धकेले जाने के प्रति सचेत रहने के प्रति सचेत रहने के साथ ही गतिमान भीड़ में हमेशा अपना संतुलन बनाये रखना जरूरी हैं /Recognizing the conditions for both types of disasters is a key responsibility. Be wary of being pushed against barriers in static crowds, and be vigilant about your footing in dense, moving crowds.
