In the week following the devastating flood, a thick pall of despair hung over Dehradun.
Santa was a picture of gloom.
He sat on his porch, looking at the muddy, scarred landscape.
“It is hopeless, Banta,” he said, his voice a low murmur.
“We saw the reports.”
“This is happening everywhere—Bangladesh, Germany, Pakistan.”
“The climate is changing fast “
“The rains are getting heavier.”
“We have built our houses in the wrong places.”
“We have buried our rivers and canals.”
“What can two simple men like us possibly do against such a giant, global problem?”
“We are helpless.”
Banta, who had been quietly sharpening a long, thick bamboo pole, looked up at Santa.
“You are right, Santa,” he said.
“We cannot stop the climate from changing overnight.”
“But you are wrong about being helpless.”
“You are suffering from what I call analysis paralysis.”
“You are so overwhelmed by the size of the problem that you have forgotten the power of a single, simple action.”
“What action?” Santa asked, his voice full of skepticism.
“The Germans,” Banta said, a new energy in his voice.
“After a terrible flood destroyed their Ahr Valley, did they just sit and cry about climate change?”
“No!”
“They started a brilliant program called Room for the River.”
“They did not try to build higher walls.”
“They did the opposite.”
“They started giving the river back its space.”
“They learned a hard lesson, and they acted on it.”
“And today, we are going to learn the German lesson.”
He handed Santa another sharpened bamboo pole.
“We cannot give the entire river back its space today,” Banta continued.
“But we can start with the small stream at the bottom of our own garden.”
“We are going to stop being victims and we are going to become soldiers.”
“We are going to plant a bamboo army.“
Santa looked from the bamboo pole in his hand to the eroded, vulnerable bank of their local stream.
“An army?”
“Yes!” Banta’s eyes shone with a practical, powerful vision.
“Every single bamboo pole we plant is a soldier.”
“Its roots will be the anchor that holds the soil together.”
“Its strong, flexible body will be the shield that slows the water down when it rises.”
“It is a nature-based buffer.”
“It is a simple, cheap, and incredibly powerful solution.”
“We cannot stop the next cloudburst, but we can certainly reduce its power to cause harm, right here in our own backyard.”
A flicker of hope returned to Santa’s eyes. He was tired of feeling helpless.
The idea of a bamboo army was simple, tangible, and heroic.”
He picked up his bamboo spear and stood up.
They walked down to the stream.
The work was hard, digging holes in the wet soil and planting the bamboo stakes.
But with every pole they planted, Santa felt the heavy weight of his despair lifting.
He was no longer a helpless victim of a global problem.
He was a soldier, a warrior, a planter of hope.
He was part of a small, local, and profoundly meaningful solution.
Their bamboo army was not just holding the soil; it was holding back the flood of hopelessness.

प्रकृति आधारित समाधान – सुगम, सुलभ व प्रभावशाली: बांस का उपयोग प्रकृति आधारित समाधान का एक उदाहरण हैं। बांस की तरह अन्य गहरी जड़ो वाली स्थानीय वानस्पतिक प्रजातियों का रोपण भू-क्षरण रोकने, ढाल को स्थिर बनाने, जल प्रवाह की गति को नियंत्रित करने तथा बाढ़ के पानी की कटाव करने व बहा कर ले जाने की क्षमता को कम करने का सरल, मितव्ययी, अत्यन्त प्रभावी तथा पारिस्थितिक रूप से लाभकारी उपाय हैं।
दुनिया-जहान में उपयोग में लाये गये समाधानों से सीखो: आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण हमें सिखाता हैं कि हमें हर बार स्वयं प्रयोग कर के समाधानों का विकास नहीं करना हैं। एक सी समस्याओ के समाधान के लिये हम अन्य क्षेत्रों में सफलतापूर्वक उपयोग में लाये गये समाधानों का अध्ययन कर, उनमे स्वयं की विशिष्ट स्थितियों के अनुरूप वांछित परिवर्तन कर, उपयोग में ला सकते हैं।
समाज की भागीदारी से परिणाम कई गुना बेहतर हो सकते हैं: प्रतिरोध्यता केवल सरकार का उत्तरदायित्व नहीं हैं, इसका विकास हमेशा ही समाज के स्तर से होता हैं। अतः सामुहिक भागीदारी से किये गये कार्य त्वरित, प्रभावी व सकारात्मक परिवर्तनों का सूत्रधार बनने के साथ ही स्थानीय सुरक्षा के प्रति सामुहिक उत्तरदायित्व तथा शाक्ति सम्पन्न होने का भाव ला सकने में सक्षम हैं।
सकारात्मकता से सफलता सम्भव: अपनी विवशता पर रोते रहने के स्थान पर सकारात्मकता के साथ समाधानों को खोज कर उन पर अमल करने से ही हम आपदाओं का सफलतापूर्वक सामना कर सकते हैं। अतः समाज को संगठित व प्रेरित करने के लिये हमेशा ही सकारात्मक तथा समाधानपरक उदाहरणों का सहारा लेना चाहिये।
