Santa was working as a volunteer coordinator at a newly built rural digital community center.
He was looking at a glossy proposal for an ultra-premium, multi-crore astronomical seismic monitoring station that required heavy concrete vaults and imported satellite arrays.
“Banta, look at my grand vision!” Santa boasted, tapping the proposal document.
“I am asking the district treasury for ten lakh rupees to buy a single high-end German seismometer.”
“Once we bury it in a deep vault under our school, our village will be a world-class scientific hub!”
“We will be protected by top-tier engineering!”
Banta walked in, carrying a small cardboard box containing three tiny microchips mounted on simple plastic boards with USB cables, worth barely a few hundred rupees each.
He plugged one into a basic laptop terminal.
“Santa-ji, your grand vision is an expensive ornament,” Banta smiled, tapping the tiny chip.

Santa crossed his arms, unimpressed.

“Because density beats luxury during a crisis, Santa!” Banta explained, opening an interactive map on the terminal.

“But look at the best part—it’s completely free!”
“Look at this application called ‘Did You Feel It?’”
“The moment the shaking stops, every citizen opens a simple multilingual questionnaire on their mobile phone: ‘Did objects fall? Did your building crack? Could you stand up?’”
“By aggregating these crowdsourced human felt reports with our cheap sensor data, the disaster management agency classifies high- vs. low-impact zones within ten minutes!”
“We move from ‘where was the quake?‘ to ‘where is the damage severe?‘ before the phone towers even get overloaded.”
“It’s citizen science saving human lives!”
Santa watched the screen track a mock simulation, the tiny sensors flashing data points instantly.
“Oye… so my expensive proposal is just one eye, but your cheap network is an army of a thousand eyes?”
“Exactly, Santa-ji,” Banta said.
“True resilience uses software and public participation to build a shield that everyone can afford.”
