Santa was looking worried.
He had finally accepted Banta’s advice that his existing house sat in an active earthquake zone, but now he was staring at a massive, complex engineering blueprint given to him by an expensive urban consultant.
“Banta, look at this disaster!” Santa groaned, holding up his head.
“The consultant says to make my house safe, I need to dismantle my roof, install specialized shock-absorbing dampers imported from Japan, and use aerospace-grade carbon fiber wrap!”
“It costs more than the value of the whole house!”
“If this is what ‘DRR compliance’ means, I’d rather take my chances with the earthquake!”
Banta laughed, tearing up the consultant‘s exorbitant quote.
“Santa-ji, you have been trapped by a ‘Techno-Luxury’ illusion.”
“Disaster risk reduction doesn’t mean building a spaceship.”
“It must be economically viable, simple, and easily adoptable, otherwise it’s just a luxury for the rich!”
“But Banta, how can a cheap solution stop a tectonic hazard?” Santa asked, skeptical.
Banta led Santa to his own backyard tool shed.
On the table, he laid out a simple, local blueprint written in plain vernacular text, alongside a list of materials available at the neighbourhood hardware store.
“Look here,” Banta explained.
“We don’t need imported dampers.”
“We just need Retrofitting Basics.”
“By using standard, locally available steel mesh, anchor bolts from the local bazaar, and proper cement plaster, we can create vertical and horizontal ‘seismic bands’ around your existing masonry walls.”
“It costs less than a basic home renovation, uses local masons who understand our context, and prevents the walls from falling inward during shaking.”
“The risk tools must be communicated with clear cost implications and material sources so that adoption becomes an easy, voluntary choice, not a financial penalty!”
Santa looked at the local hardware list, his face brightening up.
“Oye! I can buy all of this right next to the sweet shop!”
“And the cost is less than my new TV!”
“Exactly,” Banta smiled.
“Once the shield is made affordable and simple, protecting your family becomes a joyful choice, not an impossible burden.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- न्यूनीकरण उपायों की आर्थिक सुगमता / Economic Viability of Mitigation:
- जोखिम कम करने वाले उपाय सस्ते, सरल और स्थानीय रूप से उपलब्ध सामग्री पर आधारित होने चाहिए। अत्यधिक महंगे उपाय आम जनता को सुरक्षा अपनाने से रोकते हैं / Risk reduction techniques must be low-cost, simple, and utilize locally available materials. Exorbitant or overly complex solutions lead to public rejection and higher vulnerability.
- व्यावहारिक तकनीकों का संचार / Actionable Tool Communication:
- जागरूकता अभियानों में लागत, सामग्री के स्रोत और चरण-दर-चरण मार्गदर्शन को स्पष्ट रूप से शामिल किया जाना चाहिए ताकि लोग केवल जागरूक न रहें, बल्कि अपने घरों को सुरक्षित भी बना सकें / Awareness campaigns must explicitly state the cost implications, material sources, and step-by-step guidance to convert passive risk awareness into active structural retrofitting.
