Santa is beaming, hands on his hips, admiring the skeletal frame of a new floor being added atop his existing one.
“Banta! Come, see my progress!”
“After attending that Bhukamp Suraksha Jagrukta Karykram of SDMA last month, I am a new man!”
“I have taken the earthquake-proof pill!”
Banta looks at the construction, his experienced eyes narrowing slightly at the thinness of the steel rods and the wide spacing of the column ties.
“An earthquake-proof pill, Santa?”
“That sounds like a magical medicine!”
“What did they teach you?”
“They taught me that these beam-column structures are the safest!” Santa declares confidently.
“The expert showed us pictures.”
“He said the building’s load goes into the columns, then to the foundation.”
“As long as you have this Jaal of beams and columns, your house is safe.”
The fear of that old 1999 Chamoli earthquake that our parents talked about… it’s gone!”
“Now, with this knowledge, I can easily add another floor for my son’s family.”
“No problem!”
Banta sighs softly.
“Santa, it’s wonderful that you attended the Jagrukta Karykram of SDMA.”
“And it’s true that a well-designed, well-reinforced, and well-executed beam–column structure is very strong.”
“But what the expert perhaps didn’t emphasize enough, or what we sometimes choose not to hear, is that this design is only as good as the Dawai ki Maatra.”
“A little less steel here, a little more water in the concrete there, a wrongly bent stirrup… and your earthquake-proof pill can quickly turn into a sugar candy – looking good, but offering no real protection.”
He points to the new construction.
“This frame has been put up by our friend Ramlal, who is a good man, but he learned his trade by watching others, not through formal training.”
“Is he following the exact engineering drawings?”
“Do we have an engineer checking the quality at every stage?”
“Or have we just taken the general idea of a beam–column house and assumed it’s automatically invincible?”
“And about the old fear, Santa,” Banta continues, his voice gentle but firm.
“It’s natural that the sharp memory of those past earthquakes has faded for many of us.”
“Psychologists call it the ‘Fading Affect Bias.”
“Our minds heal by softening the trauma.”
“But we must not let the fading of fear lead to the birth of foolish overconfidence.”
“Our Jagrukta must lead to discipline and respect for quality, not just a blind faith in a design name.”
“Otherwise, this new Jagrukta itself becomes a danger, emboldening us to build higher and riskier structures without the necessary expertise.”
Santa’s confident smile falters.
He looks at his new second floor, not as a symbol of strength, but with a new question in his eyes.
“So, you’re saying I took the name of the Dawai, Banta, but I didn’t check the dosage or the qualifications of the doctor?”
“And my forgotten fear has made me a reckless patient?”
Banta nods.
“A wise conclusion, Santa.”
“True Jagrukta means understanding both the promise and the peril.”
“It means knowing that a strong design needs strong, knowledgeable, skilled, and honest hands to bring it to life safely.”
“Let’s not let a little knowledge become a dangerous thing.”
