Santa was standing in the middle of his courtyard in Chandigarh, holding a battery-operated radio to his ear, looking very wise.
A minor tremor had just rattled the windows ten minutes earlier, causing a wall clock to tilt and a few steel plates to clatter off the kitchen shelf.
“Oye Banta, do not panic!” Santa announced, waving his hand grandly.
“The news announcer just said the earthquake was a Magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter way up in the high mountains, hundreds of kilometers away!”
“Magnitude is the absolute energy released at the source, so we are perfectly fine down here in the plains. \”
“Go back to sleep!”
Banta rushed into the courtyard, holding a smartphone showing a rapidly updating digital map and a box of freshly fried, completely smashed samosas from the neighbourhood sweet shop.
“Santa-ji, change your channel and drop your radio!” Banta panted.
“You are staring at the Magnitude—which tells you how big the monster is at its home—but you are completely blind to the Intensity, which tells you how violently the monster is shaking your own floor!”
Santa scoffed, pointing at his rigid house walls.
“Oye Banta, a 6.2 far away cannot break my solid bricks!”
“The radio says the energy source is deep in the earth!”
“The energy source doesn’t tell you how our local soft riverbed soil amplifies that energy, Santa!” Banta countered, pointing to the sweet shop across the road where a loose brick parapet had collapsed onto a parked scooter.
“Look at these samosas!”
“At the shop, the frying oil splashed out, the shelves collapsed, and the structure cracked.”
“That is MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) VII shaking!”
“For a search-and-rescue responder or a medical team, knowing the Magnitude is useless.”
“What they need instantly is the Intensity map—because it tells them exactly where the shaking strength was high enough to trap people inside buildings!”
“While you are waiting for an official scientific observatory report from the capital, the local community’s ‘Felt Reports’ are what will guide the rescue trucks to the right street!”
Santa looked at the fallen bricks across the road, then down at Banta’s smartphone screen.
“Oye… so the Richter scale tells me how big the bomb was, but Intensity tells me exactly where the shrapnel hit?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta nodded.
“And if we don’t teach our neighbourhood to report what they feel immediately, the rescue teams will waste precious hours looking at the epicenter instead of our broken walls!”

- गंगा – यमुना के मैदानों जैसी गहरी रेतीली मिट्टी (alluvial soil) भूकंपीय तरंगों के प्रभावों को गंभीर रूप से बढ़ा सकती है, जिससे दूर स्थित बड़े भूकंपों से भी स्थानीय स्तर पर भारी नुकसान हो सकता है / Deep alluvial soils, like those in the Indo-Gangetic plains, can severely amplify seismic waves, causing high-intensity structural damage even from distant, high-magnitude epicenters.
