“Friends! I have a grand plan to modernise our sacred Dhara!” Santa announces at a village gathering.
“We will pave the entire area around it with beautiful concrete tiles!”
“We will build a concrete channel to drain away the excess water cleanly!”
“No more mud, no more wild grass!”
“It will be clean, modern, and perfect for the pilgrims!”
The villagers murmur, some nodding in agreement at the idea of a clean space.
Banta, however, steps forward.
“Santa Bhai, your intention to honour the Devi is pure,” Banta says respectfully.
“But by sealing her courtyard with concrete, I fear we will make the Devi herself Pyasi.”
The villagers look at Banta, puzzled. “Make the Devi Pyasi?”
“How?” asks Santa.
“This grassy, unpaved land around our Dhara, “Banta explains, gesturing to the area, “is not just empty space.”
“It is the Dhara‘s Aanchal – its life-giving lap.”
“It is the recharge zone.”
“When it rains, this soft, porous earth soaks up the water like a sponge.”
“The water then slowly travels underground to feed our Dhara, keeping it alive throughout the year.”
“If we cover this entire area with concrete, where will the rainwater go?”
“It will flow away through the new concrete drain!” Santa says proudly.
“Exactly!”
“It will flow away!” Banta emphasises.
“It will flow away into the gully, wasted.”
“It will not seep into the ground to feed the Dhara‘s source.”
“By sealing the Aanchal, we are essentially starving the very mother who nourishes the Dhara.”
“In a few years, our beautified Dhara will have a beautiful concrete courtyard, but very little water.”
“We will have a beautiful but empty cup.”
He adds, “The wisest way to honour the Devi is to protect her entire domain.”
“We must declare this entire recharge zone a protected area.”
“We can plant more local trees and grasses here, we can build small trenches to help even more water seep in, but we must not seal it.”
“This is a lesson our ancestors knew well; they always protected the forests above their Dharas.”
“By designating and protecting these recharge zones, we maintain the health of our hydrological system, reduce erosion, and ensure our water security for generations.”
Santa, horrified at the thought of making the Dhara go dry, immediately scraps his plan.
“No concrete!”
“You are right, Banta!”
“We will protect the Devi‘s Aanchal, not seal it!”
“A living Dhara is far more beautiful than any fancy tile work.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- हिमालयी क्षेत्र में जल सुरक्षा तथा जलीय संतुलन के लिये प्राकृतिक धारो व जल स्त्रोतों के साथ ही उनके पुनर्भरण क्षेत्रों की सुरक्षा अत्यन्त आवश्यक है / Protecting natural springs and their aquifer recharge zones is critical for water security and hydrological stability in the Himalayas.
- भू-उपयोग नियोजन के अन्तर्गत इन क्षेत्रों को विधीय रूप से संरक्षित करते हुवे, पुनर्भरण को बाधित करने वाले निर्माण व अन्य मानवीय हस्तक्षेप को प्रतिबंधित किया जाना चाहिये / Land-use plans must legally designate these areas as protected zones, prohibiting activities like large-scale paving or construction that prevent groundwater recharge.
- इन क्षेत्रों में वनीकरण व भूमि संरक्षण जैसे प्रकृति आधारित समाधानों से पुनर्भरण की क्षमता में वृद्धि के साथ ही बाढ़ व भू-क्षरण का जोखिम कम हो सकता है / Promoting nature-based solutions like afforestation and soil conservation within these zones can enhance their function and reduce flood and erosion risks.
