Santa was showing off his ancestral shop in the town bazaar.
He pointed proudly to the thick, crumbling brick walls held together by old lime mortar.
“Banta, look at the heritage!”
“This shop was built in the late 19th century.”
“No steel, no concrete columns, just pure, heavy, historic bricks.”
“They don’t make them like this anymore!”
Banta tapped the wall with the back of his screwdriver.
A small cloud of dusty mortar fell out.
“You’re right, Santa.”
“They don’t make them like this anymore because they realized these buildings are structural time-bombs.”
“This is an Unreinforced Masonry (URM) structure.”
“It has zero lateral resistance.”
“Lateral resistance?”
“Banta, this shop has stood tall for over a hundred years!”
“It resists everything, even my wife’s shopping bills!” Santa laughed.
“It hasn’t met a horizontal shear wave yet, Santa-ji,” Banta said seriously.
“Do you remember the San Simeon quake I told you about?”
“California is a rich place with great engineers, but even there, the only deaths and the majority of injuries occurred in the Paso Robles area.”
“Why?”
“Because of URM buildings built in 1892—exactly like this shop of yours!”
“When the ground moves sideways during an earthquake, these unreinforced brick walls don’t flex.”
“They shatter and drop thousands of kilos of debris directly onto the street below.”
Santa’s laughter dried up as he looked at the heavy brick arch above his doorway.
“So… my historic heritage is actually a historic hazard?”
“Yes,” Banta said.
“A hundred years of safety is just a long period of luck, not a guarantee of strength.”
“If you want to keep this heritage shop open in a high-intensity seismic zone, you must invest in Seismic Retrofitting.”
“We need to anchor these walls to the floor and roof frames, inject high-strength grouting, or add steel bracing.”
“Otherwise, this history will become a headline we all regret.”

- किसी पुरानी इमारत का दशकों तक बचे रहना केवल भूकम्प न आने (किस्मत) के कारण हो सकता है, उसकी मजबूती के कारण नहीं। पुरानी इमारतों का भूकम्प-रोधी सुदृढ़ीकरण (Retrofitting) किया जाना अनिवार्य है / The fact that an old building has survived for decades is often due to tectonic quiescence (luck), not structural resilience. Retrofitting is mandatory for aging housing stocks.
