Santa was working as a high school administrator, sitting comfortably in his office eating a plate of hot samosas.
He was looking grumpily at an official directive from the State Disaster Management Authority mandating the organization of weekly “Drop, Cover, Hold On” drills and public safety awareness campaigns across all classrooms and community centers in the block.
“Oye Banta, look at this administrative bureaucracy!” Santa grumbled, throwing the directive into his desk drawer.
“They want me to interrupt my premium mathematics and physics lectures to make hundreds of students crawl under their wooden desks on a sunny Tuesday afternoon!”
“It’s an absolute waste of educational time.”
“If an earthquake happens, common sense tells everyone to run out of the door as fast as possible!”
“Why practice ducking under a table like a chicken when there is no shaking?”
Banta walked into the school office, blew a loud, high-decibel emergency whistle, and slammed his hand hard onto Santa’s glass desk, causing the plate of samosas to slide and shatter onto the floor.
“Santa-ji, your ‘common sense speed’ is an absolute guarantee of a fatal stampede!” Banta shouted as Santa automatically scrambled to protect his food.
“Panic destroys common sense in exactly three seconds unless you have built Institutionalized Muscle Memory!”
Santa dusted off his pants, annoyed.
“Oye Banta!”
“Running outside is the natural human reflex!”
“Why block the doors by telling children to hide under a wooden table?”
“Because running down unreinforced concrete stairwells during active shaking is the single leading cause of secondary injuries and structural crushing deaths, Santa!” Banta explained, pointing to the 2005 Kashmir earthquake data.
“In that severe Mw 7.6 event, over 80,000 deaths occurred, with thousands of school children buried because buildings lacked resilience and occupants panicked into collapsing exits!”
“When the ground shakes violently, you cannot stand up, let alone run down a hallway.”
“Public safety campaigns worldwide prove that the ‘Drop, Cover, Hold On‘ protocol is the most effective immediate survival reflex.”
“It protects your head and vital organs from falling ceiling plaster, light fixtures, and shattering window glass—which cause 80% of immediate field injuries!”
“By establishing local disaster management committees and practicing these drills regularly in schools and offices, you turn a chaotic public panic into a structured, disciplined survival routine.”
“True safety isn’t an un-practiced theory, Santa; it’s an automatic reflex that saves a child’s life before the rescue teams can even start their trucks!”
Santa looked at his smashed plate on the floor, the behavioural reality of a sudden shock sinking into his administrative framework.
He pulled the directive out of the drawer and grabbed his main school microphone.
“Oye Banta… so a mock drill today is what keeps our children whole when the real midnight tremor strikes?”
“Exactly, Santa-ji,” Banta smiled, handing him the emergency whistle.
“Let’s activate the school safety protocol now, so our future generations are anchored in readiness.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- ‘ड्रॉप, कवर, होल्ड ऑन‘ और मस्कुलर मेमोरी / The Critical Value of Structural Muscle Memory:
- भूकंप के दौरान घबराकर बाहर भागना हादसों को बढ़ाता है क्योंकि हिलती जमीन पर सीढ़ियां सबसे पहले टूटती हैं। स्कूलों और दफ्तरों में नियमित ‘ड्रॉप, कवर, होल्ड ऑन‘ (झुकें, ढकें, पकड़ें) मॉक ड्रिल आयोजित करके जीवन रक्षक शारीरिक आदत (muscle memory) विकसित करना अनिवार्य है / Running during active seismic shaking accelerates falls and panics occupants into collapsing exit stairwells. Institutionalizing the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” protocol via regular school and workplace drills builds immediate, life-saving muscle memory.
- स्कूल सुरक्षा और सामुदायिक भागीदारी / Decentralized School Safety Committees:
- भूकंप सुरक्षा को केवल कागजों तक सीमित न रखकर स्कूल के पाठ्यक्रमों में शामिल किया जाना चाहिये और स्थानीय स्तर पर आपदा प्रबंधन समितियों का गठन करके आपातकालीन प्राथमिक चिकित्सा किट पहले से तैयार रखनी चाहिये / Comprehensive seismic readiness requires integrating disaster risk education into school curricula and establishing local disaster management committees to pre-position community emergency kits and first-aid networks.
