“It will be the grandest courtyard in the entire valley!” Santa announces enthusiastically to Banta, unrolling a rough sketch.
“We will lay a smooth, strong Concrete ki Dari over this whole area.”
“Perfect for weddings, parties, everything!”
“And we can build right up to the edge of that little dry Gadera, giving us maximum space.”
Banta looks at the sketch and then at the small, seemingly insignificant gully that snakes along the edge of the proposed site.
“Santa,” he says, “your idea for a community space is wonderful.”
“But if you roll out this vast concrete carpet and choke the gully‘s throat, you are inviting the mountain to hold its breath.”
“And when it finally exhales, it will be with a furious roar.”
“Hold its breath?”
“Roar?” Santa chuckles.
“Banta, you speak in such dramatic riddles!”
“It’s a tiny, useless gully!”
“That useless gully, Santa, is one of the mountain’s natural Naak–Kaan, a vital breathing channel,” Banta explains.
“For centuries, when heavy rains fall, this gully has safely guided the excess water down the mountain.”
“By building right up to its edge, we are squeezing its throat.”
“By paving everything with concrete, we are creating a giant, waterproof shield.”
“Now, the rainwater, instead of gently seeping into the earth, will have nowhere to go but to rush furiously over the surface, straight into that squeezed channel, turning a small stream into a raging torrent.”
He continues, “We need to give these natural drains a Saans Lene ki Jagah.”
“We need to enforce strict rules for a buffer zone, an area on both sides of any drainage line where no construction is allowed.”
“This gives the channel room to expand in heavy flow and keeps our structures safe.”
“And what’s wrong with a concrete carpet?” Santa asks defensively.
“It doesn’t let the earth drink!” Banta replies.
“Instead of a solid concrete slab, imagine if we used those special interlocking Jaali Wali tiles, which have gaps for grass to grow.”
“Or even just a well-compacted gravel surface.”
“These are permeable surfaces.”
“They allow a good portion of the rainwater to seep gently into the ground, reducing the amount of water rushing into the drain, recharging our groundwater, and keeping the soil healthy.”
“By laying a concrete carpet, we turn a thirsty courtyard into a slippery waterslide, creating a flood problem where none existed.”
Santa imagines a furious torrent of water rushing off his grand concrete courtyard into the choked gully.
“So, a courtyard that can drink the rain is better than one that just throws it away angrily?”
“And we must respect the personal space of even the smallest gully?”
“Banta, you’ve made me realize that even a courtyard needs to have good Sanskaar!”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
-
सभी प्राकृतिक जल निकासी नालों (गधेरों/खड्डों) के दोनों ओर बफ़र ज़ोन (सुरक्षित दूरी) बनाए रखने के लिए कड़े नियम लागू किए जाने चाहिये , ताकि ये क्षेत्र हर प्रकार के निर्माण और अतिक्रमण से पूरी तरह मुक्त रह सकें / Strict regulations must be implemented and enforced to maintain buffer zones around all natural drainage channels, free from construction and encroachment.
-
सतही जल बहाव (Surface Runoff) को कम करने, त्वरित बाढ़ (फ़्लैश फ़्लड) के जोखिम को घटाने और भूजल पुनर्भरण को बढ़ावा देने के लिये निर्माण कार्यों में पारगम्य सतहों (जैसे इंटरलॉकिंग पेवर ब्लॉक्स, बजरी/कंकड़) के उपयोग को प्रोत्साहित किया जाना चाहिये / The use of permeable surfaces (like interlocking paver blocks, gravel) should be encouraged in construction to reduce surface runoff, mitigate flash flood risk, and promote groundwater recharge.

इन प्राकृतिक जल निकासी नालों (गधेरों/खड्डों) की पहचान और सुरक्षा में स्थानीय समुदायों को शामिल करने तथा जल-संवेदनशील डिज़ाइनों को अपनाने से लोगों में अपनेपन की भावना जागृत होगी और इनकी दीर्घकालिक प्रभावशीलता सुनिश्चित की जा सकेगी / Involving local communities in identifying and protecting these natural drains and implementing water-sensitive designs will foster ownership and ensure long-term effectiveness.
