Santa was standing at the drafting table inside a project management trailer on a major Himalayan highway tunnel site, holding a red marker and a pair of scissors.
He was reviewing the construction blueprints for a new 4.5-kilometer single-tube road tunnel intended to cut travel time for seasonal pilgrims.
Banta walked into the site trailer, wearing an orange safety vest and carrying a copy of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Safety Guidelines, a laser methane detector, and historical forensic reports from the November 2023 Silkyara tunnel disaster in Uttarkashi.
He leaned over the blueprints and noticed Santa cutting a large rectangular section out of the drawing.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“What are you doing with those scissors?” Banta asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Are you making festive paper decorations for the site office?”
Santa chuckled, tossing the cutout scrap into the wastebasket.
“Banta, this is what I call ‘budget optimization‘!”
“The design consultant included an expensive, parallel escape tunnel running alongside the main vehicle tube, complete with cross-passages every 300 meters!”
“Do you know how many crores of rupees that costs?”
“Double the excavation!”
“Double the concrete!”
“Why spend public money on an empty backup tunnel that nobody will use 99% of the time?”
“I have eliminated the escape tube!’
“We will build one single wide tube, put high-grade LED lights, and finish the job in record time.”
“Chalta hai!”
Banta reached over, picked up a steel tiffin box from the table, placed a small toy truck inside, closed the latch securely, and locked the single clasp on the front.
Then he pressed his thumb over the small air vent on the lid.
“Santa-ji, imagine you are one of the forty-one construction workers trapped inside that tin box when thirty meters of crushed rock shears off from the roof near the entrance!” Banta said sternly, his voice echoing in the trailer.
“Tell me: where is your escape trapdoor?”
Santa shifted uncomfortably, pulling at his collar.
“Oye Banta… why speak of tragedies?”
“Modern concrete lining doesn’t collapse!”
“That Silkyara event in Uttarakhand was an extraordinary, once-in-a-century accident!”
“It was a systemic design negligence, Santa, not a freak accident!” Banta roared.
“Have we learned absolutely nothing from our own soil?”
“In November 2023 at Silkyara in Uttarkashi, forty-one innocent workers were trapped underground for seventeen agonizing days when a shear zone collapsed near the portal!”
“Why did the entire nation have to hold its breath while international auger machines and rat-hole miners drilled through the rubble?”
“Because the project had zero dedicated egress infrastructure!”
“No parallel escape tunnel, no service shaft, and no emergency escape pipe built into the wall!“
Santa’s jaw dropped, his eyes darting to the wastebasket.
“Look at international lifelines, Santa!”
“In the Swiss Alps, following the tragic 2001 Gotthard Road Tunnel fire and the 1999 Mont Blanc disaster, international tunnel safety codes were rewritten in stone!”
“In Switzerland‘s 57-kilometer Gotthard Base Tunnel and modern Austrian road projects, it is a non-negotiable legal crime to build an underground transit tunnel without parallel escape tubes or pedestrian cross-passages every 250 to 325 meters!”
“If a fire breaks out, if toxic fumes accumulate, or if a rock mass shears off the portal, workers and motorists can step through pressurized fire doors into an independent, fresh-air safety conduit and walk out alive!”
“Cutting the escape tunnel to save construction money turns an underground asset into an un-ventilated concrete tomb!”
“You cannot balance economic speed against human heartbeats!”
Santa stared at the locked steel tiffin box, imagining seventeen days in the dark under thousands of tons of fractured mountain rubble.
He plunged his hand into the wastebasket, fished out the discarded blueprint section, and reached for the cellophane tape.
“Oye Banta… so an escape tunnel isn’t a luxury spare room… it’s the only oxygen lung a mountain worker has when the roof gives up?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta nodded.
“Tape it back, mandate the escape shafts, and ensure that every worker who enters the heart of the mountain has an open door to return to their family!”

Single-tube configurations without redundant egress create catastrophic entrapment risks during shear-zone collapses.
- अंतर्निर्मित जीवन-रक्षक पाइपलाइन जाल / Pre-Installed Continuous Life-Support Ducting:
- सुरंग निर्माण के दौरान ही उसकी पक्की सतह (invert) के भीतर भारी सुरक्षात्मक स्टील पाइप पहले से बिछाये जाने चाहिये , ताकि यदि मुहाने पर मलबा गिर भी जाये , तो भी फंसे हुवे लोगों तक बिना देरी के ऑक्सीजन, पानी, खाना और संचार पहुँचाया जा सके / All deep tunnelling projects must incorporate structural pre-installed steel conduits within the invert slab to supply emergency oxygen, potable water, food packets, and two-way fiber-optic communications in the event of an unexpected portal collapse.
