Santa was working as the automated operations dispatcher for a regional railway and electrical grid terminal checkpoint in the foothills.
He was sitting with his feet up on the desk, playing a mobile phone game, right next to a high-density digital display panel connected to an integrated Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) network.
“Oye Banta, look at this high-tech display show!” Santa laughed, tapping the digital screen.
“The department has installed hundreds of community sensors, satellite-based InSAR tracking links, and real-time GPS monitors up in the high mountains.”
“They say it can detect a fault rupture and send an alert before the actual shaking wave reaches my station down here.”
“But tell me, if a major quake strikes, what can a simple two-minute alert do?”
“You can’t even pack your bags or run to the village in two minutes!”
“It’s just an expensive digital countdown timer!”
Banta rushed into the control room, holding a prototype automated relay switch and a regional seismic telemetry manual.
He pushed Santa’s feet off the desk and pointed to a red flashing test indicator on the display panel.
“Santa-ji, shut down your phone game and open your engineering eyes!” Banta shouted, tapping the automated relay.
“Two minutes isn’t a timer to pack your bags; two minutes is the critical window needed to prevent a secondary infrastructural catastrophe!”
Santa frowned, crossing his arms.
“Oye Banta!”
“Two minutes is too short!”
“A human operator cannot make complex administrative decisions in 120 seconds!”
“A human doesn’t need to make the decision—the system does it automatically, Santa!” Banta countered.
“When an Earthquake Early Warning System detects the initial P-wave up in the high mountain segments, it transmits a digital signal at the speed of light—orders of magnitude faster than the destructive S-wave traveling through the ground!”
“Within seconds, that warning automatically triggers automated system shutdowns: it cuts power to high-voltage electrical grids to prevent widespread urban fires, triggers emergency brakes on transit railways to avoid high-speed derailments, shuts off main gas lines, and opens automated doors in hospitals and fire stations!”
“Countries like Japan and Mexico have saved thousands of lives and billions in asset infrastructure using these exact seconds of alert.”
“By connecting community sensors with cross-border data sharing across India, Nepal, and Bhutan, we buy our emergency systems the vital time needed to safe-zone our critical lifelines before the ground even starts moving under the tracks!”
Santa watched the automated test simulation safely kill the power to a mock grid panel on the screen, the mechanical precision of the early warning framework clearing his confusion.
“Oye… so the warning doesn’t stop the ground from breaking, it just stops our cities from catching fire and crashing?”
“Exactly, Santa-ji,” Banta smiled.
“An early warning gives our infrastructure the reflex to protect itself before the impact arrives.”

- ‘भूकंप प्रारंभिक चेतावनी प्रणाली‘ (EEWS) बिना नुकसान पहुँचाने वाली प्राथमिक तरंगों (P-waves) और विनाशकारी द्वितीयक तरंगों (S-waves) के बीच की गति के अंतर का उपयोग करके प्रकाश की गति सेडिजिटल अलर्ट भेजती है, जिससे सुरक्षात्मक कदम उठाने के लिए बहुमूल्य सेकंड मिल जाते हैं / Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) utilize the velocity differential between non-destructive seismic P-waves and destructive S-waves to transmit automated digital alerts at the speed of light, providing vital seconds for safety execution.
