“Banta, it’s the strangest thing!” Santa exclaims, pointing to a section of the hillside a little distance away.
“Our own Dhara is weeping now instead of flowing, just as you feared.”
“But look over there!”
“On that steep, rocky slope where nothing but dry grass grew, there’s a new Seelan!”
“The ground is all wet and marshy, and little trickles of muddy water are coming out.”
“Where has this Naya Paani come from?”
Banta looks at the new seepage with deep concern.
“Santa, that is not Naya Paani.”
“That is our old water.”
“It is our Bhatka Hua Paani.”
“Bhatka Hua Paani?” Santa asks, scratching his head.
“Yes,” Banta replies.
“Remember the mountain’s veins we spoke of?”
“The tunnel didn’t destroy the water; it just destroyed its Ghar ka Raasta.”
“So now, the water, blocked from its usual path to our Dhara, is desperately searching for a new way out.”
“And it has found a weak spot here, on this steep slope, and is now forcing its way out.”
He picks up a small Matka, lying nearby.
“Imagine this is the mountain, and it has one proper spout – our Dhara.”
“Now, if I block that spout with my thumb,” he demonstrates, “but then make a tiny, rough hole on the side with a stone… what happens?”
“The water will leak out from the new hole, of course!” says Santa.
“Exactly!”
“And it won’t be a clean, steady flow like from the spout.”
“It will be a messy, unpredictable leak,” Banta says, perfectly describing the new muddy seepage.
“But there’s a bigger danger, Santa.”
“That slope over there has been dry and stable for thousands of years.”
“It was not designed by nature to handle a constant flow of water from within.”
“This constant seepage is like giving the slope a slow, persistent Bukhar.”
“It’s making the internal rock and soil wet, heavy, and weak.”
“We are lubricating a potential new landslide from the inside!”
Santa looks horrified.
“So our ‘lost water’ has become a ‘new danger’?”
“By solving one problem of connectivity, we might be creating a future landslide right below our village?”
“That is the terrible risk of disturbing things we don’t fully understand,” Banta says grimly.
“We have punctured the mountain’s plumbing, and now we don’t know where the leaks will show up, and what damage they will cause when they do.”
“This Bhatka Hua Paani might look small today, but it could be the first symptom of a very serious illness developing within the mountain.”
Santa stares at the wet patch on the slope, no longer as a curiosity, but as a warning sign.
“First it stole our Dhara‘s water, and now it’s giving the slope a fever…”
“Banta, this tunnel business is like a doctor who cures a headache by giving the patient a stomach ache instead!”
“It seems we need to be very, very watchful of where this Bhatka Hua Paani decides to travel next.”

- उत्पन्न हो सकने वाले इस नये जोखिम का आंकलन व निवारण करने के लिये सुरंग खोदने के उपरान्त भू-जल के प्रवाह में आये परिवर्तनों की निगरानी आवश्यक है / Monitoring for such hydrological changes during and after tunnelling projects is critical for anticipating and mitigating new risks.
- हिमालय की जटिल भू-वैज्ञानिक जटिलता के कारण एक क्षेत्र में की गयी छेड़छाड़ किसी दूसरे क्षेत्र में भारी विनाश का कारण बन सकती है / The interconnectedness of Himalayan geology means that a disturbance in one area can trigger a cascade of hazardous consequences elsewhere.
