“It’s daylight robbery, Banta!” Santa complains, throwing his hands in the air.
“I hired that young engineer to make a proper plan for my guesthouse, and now he is saying he needs to do a Mitti ki Jaanch and a geotechnical investigation!”
“He wants to charge a hefty sum just to dig a few holes and look at the dirt!”
“I can do that for free!”
“It’s just a way for these educated city folk to make extra money!”
Banta listens patiently, then smiles.
“Santa,” he says, “you are a wonderful cook.”
“Tell me, when you decide to cook a grand feast, do you use the exact same recipe for Pahadi mutton as you do for paneer tikka?”
“Of course not!” Santa scoffs.
“These are completely different things!”
“One needs slow cooking, different spices, different heat.”
“And how do you know that?” Banta asks.
“From experience!”
“By understanding the ingredients!” Santa declares proudly.
“Precisely!” Banta beams.
“The engineer is trying to be a good cook for your house.”
“He knows that every plot of land in these mountains is a different ingredient.”
“One plot might have hard rock underneath, another might have soft clay, a third might be sitting on old landslide debris.”
“He needs to do his investigation to understand the exact nature of his ingredient – your land – before he can write the correct recipe for the foundation and the structure.”
“To build without this knowledge is like trying to cook a feast blindfolded!”
He continues, “A good investigation will tell him how to design a foundation that won’t sink, where to place the columns for best support, and how to manage the drainage.”
“And a truly wise recipe, Santa, would also suggest using our own local masalas – our beautiful stone, our strong wood, and the time-tested designs of our traditional architecture.”
“A house built with these local materials, using the skills of our own artisans, is not only safer and more sustainable, but it also preserves the unique cultural Swaad of our region, which is what tourists come to experience!”
Santa, an excellent cook, immediately understands the analogy.
“Aha! So the engineer isn’t just digging holes; he’s reading the recipe in the soil!”
“And you’re saying a house built with a local recipe and local ingredients will not only be stronger but also more delicious for tourists?”
“Without a doubt!” Banta affirms.
“That’s how we protect our cultural heritage and promote genuine, sustainable tourism at the same time.”
“The engineer’s fee for reading the recipe is a small price to pay to ensure the feast doesn’t end in a stomach ache!”
