Santa was in a panic. A large crack had appeared across his main apple terrace, and the soil looked “bloated” and wet, even though it hadn’t rained in two days.
He was trying to “fix” it by filling the crack with cement.
“Banta, the mountain is splitting open!” Santa cried.
“I’m trying to glue it back together, but the cement just disappears into the hole!”
Banta walked up, carrying a long, plastic pipe with hundreds of tiny holes drilled into it.
“Santa, you’re trying to fix a broken heart with a band-aid.”
“The mountain isn’t splitting because it’s dry; it’s splitting because it’s constipated with water!”
“Constipated?”
“A mountain?” Santa blinked.
“Yes!” Banta said.
“Underneath all this apple–orchard soil, there is trapped water from your irrigation and the spring snowmelt.”
“It’s building up Pore Water Pressure.”
“It’s like a balloon that’s about to pop.”
“Filling the crack with cement just traps the water even more!”
“Then what is that flute you’re carrying?” Santa asked, pointing to the pipe.
“This is the mountain’s new ‘Internal Plumbing‘,” Banta explained.
“It’s a perforated horizontal pipe.”
“We drill into the slope and insert these.”
“These don’t take the soil out; they just bleed the water out.”
“It’s called Dewatering.”
“By taking the water out of the soil mass, the mountain becomes lighter and the friction returns.”
“The ‘halwa‘ becomes ‘biscuit‘ again!”
Santa watched as Banta demonstrated. As soon as the pipe was inserted, a steady stream of muddy water began to flow out.
Slowly, the “bloated” look of the terrace began to subside.
“Oye! It’s like a magic straw!” Santa cheered.
“From now on, no more cement for me.”
“I’ll just give the mountain a few ‘stethoscopes‘ to keep its blood pressure low!”
