“Just one more!”
“Adjust a little!” the taxi driver calls out.
Santa, eager to get home, tries to find a foothold on the back bumper.
“Santa!”
“Get down!” Banta’s voice cuts through the noise.
He pulls Santa back firmly.
“What are you doing?”
“Are you trying to become a decoration on this jeep?”
“But Banta, it’s the last one!” Santa protests.
“And everyone does it!”
“A little adjustment, and we all reach home.”
Banta points to the jeep, its tyres bulging under the weight, its body leaning precariously.
“Santa, that jeep is no longer a vehicle.”
“It is a disaster waiting to happen.”
“Think of it as a hardworking Khachchar.”
A Khachchar can carry a certain load safely up and down these hills.”
“But what happens if you keep loading sack after sack onto its back, far beyond its capacity?”
“It… it would struggle,” Santa admits.
“Its legs might tremble, and it could lose its footing on a narrow path.”
“Exactly!” Banta exclaims.
“This jeep is that overloaded Khachchar!”
“Its legs – the suspension and tyres – are groaning under the extra weight.”
“Its breathing – the brakes – will not work properly on a steep downhill slope because they have to stop twice the weight they were designed for.”
“Its balance is completely off, making it very easy to topple on a sharp turn.”
“By hanging off the back, you are adding the final straw that could break the Khachchar‘s back.”
Santa looks at the dangerously swaying jeep with new eyes.
He imagines the brakes failing on the steep descent to their village.
“We must learn to say no,” Banta says firmly.
“No to the greedy driver who puts our lives at risk for a few extra rupees.”
“And no to our own impatience that makes us take such foolish chances.”
“It is better to walk the last five kilometers home safely, or even to stay the night in the market, than to ride on the back of a tired, overloaded Khachchar that is about to stumble into the gorge.”
Santa nods, a look of realization on his face.
“You are right, Banta.”
“My life is worth more than a few hours of waiting.”
“Let this tired Khachchar go.”
“We will find another way.”

सवारियों का उत्तरदायित्व / Passenger Responsibility: क्षमता से अधिक सवारी बैठाये जाने की स्थिति में सवारियों को विरोध के साथ ही शिकायत भी करनी चाहिये / Passengers should refuse to travel in overloaded vehicles and report offenders to the authorities.
