Santa was looking at a blueprint for a new community hall.
“Look at this, Banta!”
“I’ve asked the engineer for the best ‘Seismic Pillars.’”
“I’ve also asked for a ‘Rainproof Roof.’”
“I have two separate budgets for two separate problems.”
“I am a genius of organization!”
Banta looked at the plans and shook his head.
“Santa-ji, you are trying to buy two shoes for the same foot.”
“You think the earthquake and the rain will wait for their turn in the budget?”
“In 2026, resilience isn’t a list; it’s a ‘Web’.”
“A web?”
“Like a spider?”
“Yes,” Banta said.
“Climate change isn’t ‘independent’ of the earthquake‘s impact; it’s a Multiplier.”
“If an earthquake hits, and people are forced out of their homes, where do they go?”
“If it’s during a climate-induced ‘Heatwave,’ they die of heat stroke.”
“If it’s during a ‘Cloudburst,’ they get swept away while waiting for aid.”
Santa looked confused.
“So my ‘Seismic Pillars’ aren’t enough?”
“They are necessary, but not sufficient,” Banta explained.
“If your ‘Seismic Pillar’ is built on a riverbank that is eroding because of climate-induced floods, the pillar will fall regardless of how strong it is.”
“We need Integrated Resilience.”
“Our building codes for earthquakes must now consider the ‘New Normal’ of weather—higher flood levels, heavier snow loads, and more intense heat.”
“So,” Santa scratched his head, “I shouldn’t just build for the ‘Shake,’ I should build for the ‘Shake-while-it’s-boiling-and-pouring’?”
“Exactly,” Banta laughed.
“We need a ‘Resilience Umbrella’ that covers both the ground and the sky.”
“If we factor in climate extremes, we save money in the long run.”
“Otherwise, we are just building very expensive ‘disaster museums’ that will be destroyed by the very next combo-hazard.”
Santa nodded. “Right!”
“From now on, my pillars will be strong, my drains will be wide, and my planning will be as ‘Integrated’ as my mother’s khichdi!”
