Santa arrives an hour late for his usual evening chat with Banta at the village square, his face red and agitated.
“Banta! You won’t believe it!”
“A ten-minute walk from my shop to here took me an entire hour!”
“An hour!”
“Horns blaring, cars packed like ‘bhuttas‘ in a sack, smoke everywhere!”
“This ‘season’ is a curse!”
“Atithi Devo Bhava they say, but these many ‘Devas‘ are going to send us, the locals, straight to heaven with stress!”
Banta, who had been calmly watching a bird build its nest, smiles sympathetically.
“Ah, Santa, you’ve had a taste of the ‘Mahakumbh Mela‘ on our little village road, it seems!”
“It’s the peak of the season, after all.”
“Peak of madness, you mean!” Santa retorts.
“Our taps are running dry because all the water is going to the fancy hotels.”
“The garbage bins are overflowing like miniature mountains themselves.”
“And parking?”
“People are parking their cars practically in my vegetable patch!”
“Is this tourism, Banta, or an invasion?”
Banta chuckles, but then his expression turns thoughtful.
“What you’re experiencing, Santa, is what happens when a loving mother, our beautiful mountain, has far too many children trying to sit in her lap all at once.”
“Her lap, though generous, has a certain ‘god lene ki kshamata‘ – a bearing capacity.”
“It can only comfortably and safely hold so many.”
“Bearing capacity?” Santa asks, calming down a bit, intrigued by Banta’s analogy.
“Yes,” Banta explains.
“Our mountains, our villages, our roads, our water sources, our ability to manage waste – they all have a limit.”
“When the number of visitors far exceeds this natural limit, the ‘welcome‘ becomes a ‘weight.”
“The joy of sharing our beauty turns into a struggle for basic resources, for both us locals and for the tourists themselves, though they might not always see the full picture.”
He continues, “The government might proudly announce ‘record numbers’ of tourists, seeing it only as maal-aa-maal”.
“But they often forget to ask the mountain if she’s happy with so many guests at once, or if her resources are being stretched to breaking point.”
“This isn’t about stopping people from coming, Santa.”
“But it’s about niyantran aur santulan.”
“About ensuring that the number of guests matches the mountain‘s capacity to host them graciously and sustainably, without trampling her flowers or dirtying her streams.”
Santa sighs, looking at the still-congested road.
“So, our mountain‘s lap is full, and she’s starting to groan under the weight.”
And we, her permanent children, feel the pinch the most.”
“It seems a few less guests, arriving in a more spread-out way, might actually make everyone, including the mountain, a lot happier and healthier.”
Banta nods. “A healthy mountain means happy locals and truly happy guests, Santa.”
“Not just a fleeting crowd that leaves behind a trail of problems.”
“Rational numbers and responsible tourism – that’s the real ‘Atithi Devo Bhava‘ for the Himalayas.”
