Santa was sitting in his shop, staring intensely at his smartphone screen.
Every few seconds, his face would light up with a giant grin as he tapped the screen furiously.
He was watching a compilation video of a massive, 7.8 magnitude earthquake collapsing a row of multi-story buildings in a foreign city, complete with dramatic background music.
Banta walked in, holding a fresh batch of printed safety manuals on seismic retrofitting.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“What is this grand celebration?”
“Did your premium jalebi video finally cross ten thousand views, or have you won a foreign lottery?”
Santa didn’t look up, his thumb still scrolling.
“Banta, it’s better than a lottery!”
“I reshared a viral video of an earthquake flattening an entire city square in Turkey.”
“Look at the analytics!”
“In just two hours, I’ve got fifty thousand views, ten thousand shares, and three thousand new followers!”
“The more devastating the video, the more people click!”

Banta reached over, gently tapped the screen, and paused the video exactly at the moment a heavy concrete roof slab pancaked onto the floor below.
“Santa-ji, you are celebrating fifty thousand clicks, but you are completely blind to the fact that you are running a digital museum of human misery.”
“Tell me, among those ten thousand shares, did a single person learn why that specific building collapsed like a deck of cards?”
Santa blinked, confused.
“Why?”
“Because the earthquake was huge, Banta!”
“Nature is angry!”
“Nature is always doing its job, Santa,” Banta said seriously, zooming into the paused frame.
“Look closely at the pillars of that collapsed building.”
“There are no horizontal steel ties holding the vertical bars together.”
“It failed because of a classic structural defect called soft-story collapse and a total lack of ductile detailing.”

Santa looked from Banta’s face to the digital ruins on his screen, his excitement fading.
“So… I am just collecting ‘likes’ on someone else’s tragedy, while my own neighbourhood is building the exact same weak pillars?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta sighed.
“We treat these terrifying videos like entertainment, forgetting that our own high-density towns are sitting on the exact same fault lines.”
“If we don’t start using our social media reach for risk awareness and structural compliance tips, the next viral disaster video will be filmed right here in our own market—and others will be scrolling through our misery for likes!”
