On their journey back towards the plains, they stopped for a night in Rishikesh.
The evening Ganga Aarti was beginning, and the atmosphere was electric.
Near the entrance to one of the smaller ghats, a lone security guard was struggling to manage the inflow of people.
He was young and visibly stressed, his uniform soaked with sweat.
He had adopted a strategy of pure aggression.
“Move!”
“I said move!”
“No stopping, no selfies!” he barked, his voice cracking with strain.
He jabbed a finger at a family that had paused.
When a young man stopped to fix his slipper, the guard strode over and gave him a sharp shove.
“Are you deaf?”
“I said keep walking!”
Santa watched, nodding with approval.
“That fellow is tough.”
“Good.”
“He’s making sure no one gets out of line and causes trouble.”
Banta, however, was watching with a growing sense of unease.
He drew Santa away from the bottlenecked entrance.
“I wish I shared your confidence, Santa,” he said quietly.
“But that young man, in his effort to control the crowd, might be the one who causes the disaster.”
“What are you saying, Banta?”
“He’s security!”
“He’s preventing a stampede!”
“Is he?” Banta countered, his voice serious.
“He is operating under a dangerous assumption: that these people are being deliberately disobedient.”
“He sees a slowdown and thinks it’s hooliganism.”
“So he applies force.”
“But look at them—they’re packed tight.”
“They often can’t move.”
“His shouting creates anxiety, and his pushing creates sudden, unpredictable movements.”
“He could easily make someone lose their balance.”
“In a crowd this dense, one person falling is all it takes to start a collapse.”
“He’s not controlling a crowd; he’s shaking a bottle of soda with the cap on.”

It ignores the physics of crowd movement and can create the very shockwaves or stumbles that lead to a crush.
- आत्मचिंतन / Reflect: भीड़ को ले कर हमारी बुरी धारणा हमें निम्न स्तरीय व खतरनाक निर्णय लेने को प्रेरित कर सकती हैं / Assuming the worst about a crowd (that they are unruly or mindless) leads to poor and dangerous decisions.
- उत्तरदायित्व / Responsibility: केवल धक्का-मुक्की से भीड़ तो संभाल पाना संभव नहीं हैं – भीड़ प्रबन्धन के लिये उत्तरदायी व्यक्तियों को भीड़ के मनोविज्ञान के साथ ही भीड़ से जुड़े भौतिक विज्ञान के नियमो को जानना और प्रशिक्षित होना जरूरी हैं। उनका उत्तरदायित्व भीड़ को मजबूर करने से कही ज्यादा भीड़ की सहायता करना हैं / Security personnel must be trained in crowd psychology and physics, not just enforcement. Their role is to facilitate safe flow, not to force it.
