The Geomorphic Time Bomb Tour

Banta was hunched over his laptop, studying high-resolution satellite imagery of the glacier systems upstream from the Chisoti valley.

Santa, curious, peered over his shoulder.

The screen showed a landscape of stark, breathtaking beauty—towering peaks, vast glaciers, and nestled among these, a stunning, turquoise-blue lake that wasn’t on any of their old maps.

“Wow, Banta!”

“Look at that!” Santa exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with the excitement of a discoverer.

“What a beautiful, secret lake!”

“No one knows about this!”

“We should tell the Tourism Department.”

“They can make a new trek route.”

“Imagine the Instagram photos!”

“We can call it the Chisoti Heavenly Lake Trek!”

“We will be famous!”

Banta leaned back in his chair, a strange, grim smile playing on his lips.

“A brilliant marketing idea, Santa.”

“Truly inspired.”

“We can call it the Geomorphic Time Bomb Tour.”

“Geo-what?”

“Geomorphic Time Bomb,” Banta repeated, his tone chillingly cheerful.

“It’s a fantastic new adventure tourism concept.”

“The lake is held back only by a loose pile of mud and ice, what scientists call a moraine dam.”

“With the glaciers melting so fast, these time bomb lakes are popping up everywhere.”

“It’s a huge, untapped market.”

He started to sketch out the tour plan with dark, satirical enthusiasm.

“Our brochure will be very honest.”

“Visit the beautiful, unstable glacial lake before it visits you!”

“We can even install a big digital countdown timer at the roadhead in Chisoti, estimating when the dam might burst.”

“It would add a thrilling sense of urgency to the trip.”

“We’ll sell ‘I Survived the GLOF‘ T-shirts at the end.”

“It’ll be a massive hit.”

Santa stared at him, horrified. “That’s…….. that’s terrible, Banta!”

Banta’s satirical mask fell away, replaced by a look of deep concern.

“Yes, it is, Santa.”

“It is terrible.”

“But what is more terrible?”

“My dark joke, or the fact that we are already sending thousands of people on treks and pilgrimages right downstream from these very real, unmonitored time bombs, and we are not even telling them that these exist?”

“A GLOF—a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood—is what happened in the Teesta valley in Sikkim in 2023.”

“The threat is not hypothetical; it is real and growing.”

“And our entire disaster management plan is blissfully pretending these beautiful, deadly lakes aren’t even there.”

• हिमनदीय झीलें – प्रत्यक्ष व बड़ा खतरा: बढ़ रहे वैश्विक तापमान के साथ तेजी से सिकुड़ रहे ग्लेशियरो के कारण विशेष रूप से उच्च हिमालयी क्षेत्र में अवस्थित ग्लेशियर झीलों के टूटने से उत्पन्न होने वाली त्वरित बाढ़ का जोखिम लगातार बढ़ रहा हैं और इसे आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण सम्बन्धित रणनीति में सम्मिलित किया जाना चाहिये।
• शिनाख्त व निरन्तर निगरानी: ग्लेशियर झीलों का गहन मानचित्रीकरण करते हुवे विशेष रूप से उच्च जोखिम वाली झीलों का निरन्तरता में परिवीक्षण किया जाना चाहिये और यह उच्च हिमालयी क्षेत्र में पर्यटन व तीर्थाटन सम्बन्धित गतिविधियों के संचालन की एक महत्वपूर्ण व अनिवार्य शर्त हैं।
• जोखिम के बारे में बताना जरूरी: लोगो को ग्लेशियर झीलों के कारण उत्पन्न जोखिम की समझ होनी जरूरी हैं और इसके लिये गहन जागरूकता अभियानों का आयोजन किया जाना चाहिये। सच मानिये तीर्थयात्रियों व पर्यटकों के साथ ही निचले क्षेत्र ने निवास कर रहे लोगो का अधिकार हैं कि उन्हें उन पर आसन्न इस जोखिम की सच्चाई के बारे में पता हो।   
• जटिल परिदृश्यों का पूर्वानुमान: ग्लेशियर झीलों का टूटना एक जटिल प्रक्रिया हैं और इसके लिये वर्षा का होना कोई अनिवार्य शर्त नहीं हैं। अतः आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण सम्बन्धित नियोजन के अन्तर्गत तद्सम्बन्धित जटिल परिदृश्यों को सम्मिलित किया जाना चाहिये।
