Santa and Banta were looking at a large, colourful “Landslide Hazard Zonation Map” pinned to the wall of the village community hall.
Santa was very impressed.
“Look at the colours, Banta!”
“Red for danger, green for safe!”
“The geologists are so smart.”
“They’ve mapped the drainage, the road, and even the type of rock.”
“I’m moving my cows to the ‘green zone’ immediately!”
Banta took out a magnifying glass and looked closely at the ‘green zone.’
“Santa, I wouldn’t move your cows just yet.”
“This map is like a doctor who only looks at your bones but ignores the fact that you have a 10-kilo backpack of loose bricks on your back.”
Santa blinked.
“Banta, my cows don’t wear backpacks.”
“I mean the slope!” Banta groaned.
“A geologist is trained to look at the ‘in situ‘ rock—the solid bedrock.”
“But the bedrock isn’t what slides!”
“It’s the ‘loose debris‘ sitting on the rock that causes the disaster.”
“This map considers the geology, but it doesn’t map the ‘mess’ on top of it.”
“If there’s ten meters of loose rubble hiding under the grass in that green zone, it’s not green—it’s bright red!”
“So… the map has a blind spot?” Santa asked.
“Exactly,” Banta said.
“We map what is easy to see, but we ignore what is hard to measure.”
“If we don’t start mapping the ‘loose debris‘—the stuff that actually moves—these maps are just beautiful lies.”
“We need a ‘Debris Map’ if we want to save the village, not just a ‘Rock Map’.”
Santa grabbed a red marker.
“Right!”
“I’m going to go find the loose rubble and update this map myself.”
“I’ll call it ‘Santa’s Messy-Map’!”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- प्रभावी खतरा मानचित्रों (hazard maps) में ढीले मलबे की मोटाई और वितरण को शामिल किया जाना चाहिए। केवल चट्टानी भूविज्ञान (bedrock geology) जोखिम का पर्याप्त संकेतक नहीं है / Effective hazard maps MUST include the thickness and distribution of loose surface debris. Bedrock geology alone is not a sufficient indicator of risk.
- ऐतिहासिक मलबे के संचय क्षेत्रों की पहचान करने में सामुदायिक भागीदारी वैज्ञानिक खतरा मानचित्रों की सटीकता में सुधार कर सकती है / Community participation in identifying historical debris accumulation areas can improve the accuracy of scientific hazard maps.
