Santa was standing on a low-lying, soft, sandy river valley plot near an alluvial basin, holding a site plan for a heavy concrete commercial hotel complex.
He was looking out at the beautiful mountain view, completely satisfied.
“Oye Banta, look at this prime tourist location!” Santa cheered, pointing to the damp, soft soil.
“The land was cheap, digging the foundation is incredibly easy because there are no hard rocks, and the water table is right near the surface!”
“It’s an ideal setting for rapid infrastructure expansion!”
Banta walked onto the plot, carrying a regional seismic microzonation map and a bottle of water, which he shook vigorously, watching the wet sand liquefy instantly under his boots.
“Santa-ji, you think you are building on an easy foundation, but you are actually constructing a hotel on top of a giant Seismic Megaphone!” Banta warned, showing him the red-shaded zones on the map.
“You are completely ignoring site-specific risks and soil amplification!”
Santa scoffed, checking his project timeline.
“Oye Banta!”
“If the rock shakes, the sand shakes the same.”
“What does the type of soil have to do with the safety of my columns?”
“Soft soil turns a moderate tremor into a lethal devastation, Santa!” Banta shouted.
“The recent 2026 Venezuela earthquakes proved this parameter beyond doubt: buildings constructed on the soft, uncompacted sediments of coastal and valley zones suffered disproportionately higher destruction because loose soil acts as an amplifier for seismic waves, extending the duration and intensity of the shaking!”
“It’s exactly like the alluvial plains, lake beds, and landslide-prone river valleys of the Himalayan region.”
“When a multi-segment thrust rupture occurs along the India-Eurasia plate boundary, these deep sediment layers amplify the hazard, turning stable frames into structural failures through liquefaction and topographic acceleration!”

Santa looked down at the soft, muddy ground sinking under his feet, the image of amplified shockwaves clearing his complacency.
“Oye… so the soft ground actually boosts the power of the earthquake?”
“Yes, Santa-ji,” Banta said seriously.
“In the mountains and valleys, you must always choose stable, engineered ground, or the foundation will betray the structure when the crisis strikes.”
