“So what is the solution, Banta?” he asked, his voice laced with despair.
“Are we helpless?”
“Are we just doomed to see these tragedies repeat forever?”
“Should we just tell people to stop having faith, to stop visiting these holy places?”
Banta looked at his friend’s crestfallen face and his own expression softened. The cynical critic receded, and the passionate visionary emerged.
“Helpless?”
“Never, Santa.”
“Frustrated by willful ignorance, yes.”
“But helpless, no.”
“The solutions are right in front of us.”
“These are not even that expensive.”
“These just require imagination and political will.”
“Come, let me tell you about my ‘crazy’ dream for the Kedarnath Yatra of the future.”
Santa leaned forward, a flicker of hope in his eyes.
“In my dream,” Banta began, his voice painting a vivid picture, “you don’t just show up at Sonprayag.”
“A month ago, from your home, you booked a time-slot QR code for a specific day and a specific two-hour window for entry.”
“The chaos is gone before it even begins.”
“When you arrive, you look up at a large, weatherproof digital screen.”
“It reads: CURRENT TREK DENSITY: 70% (GREEN). FLOW RATE: NORMAL. WEATHER AT KEDARNATH: CLEAR. HAVE A SAFE YATRA.”
“A screen?”
“On the mountain?” Santa whispered, captivated.
“Why not?” Banta smiled.
“We have screens selling us shampoo in every city!”
“Now, as you begin the trek, you hear a calm, reassuring voice from small speakers nestled among the rocks every few hundred meters.”
“Not bhajans on a loop, but useful information.”
“Attention pilgrims, the section ahead is steep. Please watch your footing. The next water point is 500 meters away.”
Banta’s eyes shone with excitement.
“And here is the magic, Santa.”
“In a command center in Dehradun, a trained officer is watching a wall of screens showing feeds from hundreds of high-resolution cameras.”
“But he’s not just watching.”
“An AI program is watching with him.”
“Suddenly, the AI flashes a red alert on his screen: ANOMALY DETECTED: REVERSE FLOW OF 20+ PEOPLE AT KM 5. SUDDEN DENSITY INCREASE DETECTED BEHIND THE POINT.”
“The operator zooms in and sees a pilgrim has fainted.”
“He immediately speaks into the PA system for that specific section: Attention pilgrims near Rambara. There is a temporary medical stoppage ahead. Please pause your journey for a few minutes. Do not panic.”
“Simultaneously, an automated alert with the exact GPS location is sent to the nearest medical and SDRF team’s handsets.”
He leaned back, his dream complete.
“So tell me, my friend.”
“Is this a crazy, futuristic dream?”
“Or is it just using the simple, everyday technology of QR codes, cameras, and mobile alerts to treat our most sacred journeys with the seriousness and respect they deserve?”
