A government hoarding proudly proclaims: “Record Tourist Arrivals This Year! Uttarakhand Marching Towards Prosperity!“
Santa, looking at the busy road below filled with cars and buses heading towards the higher valleys, echoes the sentiment.
“Wonderful, isn’t it, Banta?”
“So many people coming, so much business for everyone!”
“Our state is truly progressing!”
The Mukhya Mantri Sahib himself said on TV that more tourists mean more development.”
Banta gazes towards the distant, hazy peaks where the glaciers nestle. He then looks at the trail of exhaust fumes rising from the road.
“Progress is indeed welcome, Santa.”
“And livelihoods are important.”
“But sometimes, I wonder if we are so busy counting the gaadiyan and the note that we are forgetting to count the fading flowers or listen to the melting glaciers.”
“Melting glaciers?”
“Fading flowers?”
“What has that got to do with tourists, Banta?” Santa asks, a bit puzzled by Banta’s philosophical tone.
“Think of it, Santa,” Banta says.
“Each of these hundreds, thousands of vehicles climbing up our fragile valleys every day, they burn fuel.”
“They release smoke, and in that smoke is fine black dust, kala carbon.”
“This fine dust travels with the wind and settles on the pristine white snow of our glaciers, those ancient rivers of ice that feed our perennial rivers like Ganga and Yamuna.”
“So?”
“A little dust on the snow, what harm can it do?” Santa asks.
“Ah, but that black dust is like a dark shawl on a sunny day for the glacier, Santa,” Banta explains.
“White snow reflects sunlight back into the sky, keeping the glacier cool.”
“But this black soot makes the glacier absorb more heat from the sun.”
“And what happens when ice absorbs more heat?”
“It melts faster!” Santa exclaims, the connection dawning on him.
“Precisely,” Banta nods gravely.
“Our glaciers are already under stress from a warming world.”
“This added burden of black carbon from ever-increasing vehicular pollution is like constantly poking a sick person.”
“They recede faster.”
“And when glaciers recede, the long-term water security of not just our Uttarakhand, but the vast plains below, is threatened.”
“The ‘fading flowers’ are a metaphor, Santa, for the overall health of our delicate mountain ecosystem, which suffers when its ‘saans lene ki kshamata‘ is overwhelmed by too much human activity.”
He continues, “So, when our leaders proudly applaud ‘record numbers,’ are they also calculating the ‘record speed’ at which our glaciers might be crying, or the ‘record strain‘ on our forests and rivers?”
“True prosperity, Santa, is not just about the jingle of coins today, but about ensuring that the natural treasures which attract people in the first place are preserved for all the tomorrows.”
“It requires looking beyond the immediate balance sheet to the long-term balance of nature.”
Santa looks towards the distant peaks with a new concern.
“So, more cars and crowds today could mean less water and beauty tomorrow?”
“It’s a scary thought, Banta.”
“Perhaps our leaders should start counting the health of our glaciers and forests with the same enthusiasm they count tourist heads.”
“A happy glacier might be a better sign of ‘progress‘ for us mountain folk than a perpetually jammed road.”
Banta smiles sadly.
“If only, Santa. If only.”
“True development here means finding that delicate balance where guests are welcome, livelihoods thrive, but the soul of the Himalayas – its environment – is not put up for a distress sale.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- हिमालय में हो रहे अनियंत्रित पर्यटन के साथ यहाँ आने वाले वाहनों की तेजी से बढ़ रही संख्या के कारण जहाँ एक ओर वायु प्रदूषण बढ़ रहा है, तो वहीं दूसरी ओर हिमनदों पर काला कार्बन जमा हो रहा है जिससे इनके गलने की रफ़्तार बढ़ रही है / Uncontrolled vehicular traffic associated with mass tourism contributes to air pollution and black carbon deposition on glaciers, accelerating their melt.
- यह पूरे हिमालयी क्षेत्र की जल सुरक्षा के लिये एक बड़ा खतरा है / This poses a significant long-term threat to water security and the overall Himalayan ecosystem.
- पर्यटन से होने वाले क्षणिक लाभ के आगे हमें पर्यावरण सुरक्षा तथा चिरस्थाई कार्यप्रणाली को अनदेखा नहीं करना चाहिये / The pursuit of short-term economic gains from increased tourist numbers should not overshadow the critical need for environmental protection and sustainable practices.
- स्वास्थ्य पर्यावरण चिरस्थाई पर्यटन तथा जीवन – यापन का आधार है और नीतियों के अन्तर्गत पर्यावरण सुरक्षा को उचित प्राथमिकता दी जानी चाहिये / True progress involves policies that safeguard the ecological integrity of the region, recognising that a healthy environment is the foundation of sustainable tourism and livelihoods.
- नीति निर्धारकों को पर्यटकों की संख्या से कहीं ज्यादा क्षेत्र की धारण क्षमता तथा पर्यावरण सुरक्षा पर ध्यान केन्द्रित करना चाहिये / Policymakers need to look beyond mere arrival numbers and focus on a holistic vision of development that includes environmental health and carrying capacity.
