Santa was standing inside a massive, brilliantly lit, newly blasted railway tunnel cutting straight through a Himalayan mountain block in Uttarakhand.
He was wearing a shiny orange safety helmet and admiring the smooth concrete walls.
“Oye Banta, look at this engineering marvel!” Santa cheered, his voice echoing off the rock.
“We are punching holes through the mountains like they are Swiss cheese!”
“This tunnel will cut travel time by four hours.”
“Progress is screaming through the hills, Banta!”
Banta walked deeper into the tunnel, pointing a flashlight at the ceiling.
In several spots, heavy streams of muddy groundwater were forcefully jetting out of fractures in the rock, pooling on the tunnel floor.
“Santa-ji, progress might be screaming, but the mountain is bleeding,” Banta said grimly, watching the water rush into an artificial drainage ditch.
“You think you’ve built a shortcut for a train, but you’ve actually built a massive, unintended sub-surface drain.”
“You are witnessing Hydraulic Short-Circuiting.”
“Banta, that’s an electrical problem!”
“This is just a little mountain sweat!” Santa scoffed.
“It’s a plumbing disaster, Santa,” Banta countered.
“Inside this mountain, high-altitude fractures and internal aquifers have stored water for centuries.”
“By blasting this mega-tunnel, you’ve created a zone of zero atmospheric pressure deep inside the rock mass.”
“The water stored way above our heads is naturally drawn down toward this empty void like a giant straw.”
“It rapidly empties the mountain‘s internal water reserves.”
Santa looked at the jetting water, then shrugged.
“Well, at least the tunnel stays clean because of the drains.”
“What’s the harm if the inside gets a little dry?”
“The harm is up there, you simple driver!” Banta said, pointing toward the mountaintop.
“While this tunnel acts as a giant drain, the natural springs—our traditional Dharas and Naulas—are drying out.”
“The vegetation is dying because the roots have no moisture.”
“And down here, as that internal pore-water pressure drops, the surrounding rock mass undergoes localized compacting and micro-fracturing.”
“The rock layers lose their internal friction.”
“You are systematically turning a solid mountain block into a fragile stack of loose biscuits, just waiting to slide into the valley during the next monsoon or seismic tremor!”
Santa stared at the leaking fractures, suddenly feeling the immense weight of the mountain above him.
“Oye… so my railway shortcut is actually an eviction notice for the mountain’s water?”
“Precisely,” Banta sighed.
“If our geohydrological models don’t account for Tunnel-Induced Drainage Syndrome, our fast tracks will end up buried under the very mountain we tried to outsmart.”
