Santa was hosting a grand family function in the open village lawn.
On the main catering table, he had arranged thousands of small, single-use 250 ml plastic bottled water cups, stacked high like a sparkling crystal pyramid.
“Banta, look at the absolute hygiene and class of my party!” Santa cheered, pointing to the plastic pyramid.
“Every guest gets their own individual sealed cup of purified groundwater!”
“No sharing, no dirty glasses, and it’s completely modern.”
“When they are done, we just sweep the plastic into the ditch!”
Banta walked up to the table, carrying a large, high-capacity copper water dispenser jug filled with fresh water filtered through a clay-pot system, alongside a stack of traditional clay Kulhars.
He tapped one of Santa’s plastic cups; it rolled off the table and crunched underfoot.
“Santa-ji, your pyramid of class is actually a double disaster for our environment,” Banta said, setting down the copper jug.
“You are paying a high premium to a corporate company for a resource that belongs to the earth, while generating tons of non-biodegradable single-use plastic waste that chokes our local drains!”
“Oye Banta!”
“It’s convenient!”
“Who has the time to wash thousands of steel glasses during a party?” Santa scoffed.
“Convenience is just a shortcut to a long-term crisis, Santa,” Banta explained.
“We need a permanent consumer and industry shift to break this cycle.”
“On the demand side, we as citizens must reduce this constant demand for packaged plastic water by normalising reusables, public filtered water kiosks, and home filtration networks.”
“And on the supply side, if these multi-national beverage and bottling companies want to operate, they cannot just pay a nominal fee and walk away.”
“We must force them to fund local Watershed Restoration Projects through specialized environmental bonds or insurance incentives.”
“They must pay for restoring our traditional ponds, desilting check dams, and financing drip-irrigation infrastructure for our farmers!”
“We must transition from an economy that buys water in throwaway plastic containers to one that protects the baseline health of the aquifer itself.”
“Now, turn off the plastic display, Santa, and let your guests enjoy fresh water from the soil’s own traditional wisdom!”
Santa looked at the mountain of plastic cups, then at the elegant copper dispenser.
He smiled, picked up a Kulhar, and poured himself a cold drink.
“You’re right, Banta!”
“Let’s dismantle the plastic pyramid.”
“True status comes from protecting our heritage, not from buying water in a single-use container!”
