Banta’s grim warnings had finally had an effect.
Santa was now a nervous wreck.
He was sitting on the sofa, nervously eating a plate of hot samosas, eyeing every piece of furniture in the room as a potential assassin.
“It’s hopeless, Banta!” he moaned, gesturing with a samosa.
“The ground is jelly, the house is a lie, the doorway is a trap!”
“We are all doomed!”
“We should just sell this flat and move back to the mountains!”
“Stop being so dramatic,” Banta said, “and stop eating for one second.”
“We are not doomed.”
“We just need to be smart.”
“The lesson from Afghanistan is that the buildings killed the people, not the quake.”
“So, we must fix our buildings.”
“We don’t need to rebuild the entire house.”
“We just need to retrofit.”
“Retro-what?”
“Is that some expensive interior decoration?”
“I don’t have money for that!”
“It’s not decoration, Santa, it’s survival.”
“And it’s cheaper than you think,” Banta said.
He pointed to the heavy bookshelf Santa was sitting under.
“Look at that.”
“It’s a killer.”
“In a quake, it will fly off the wall and crush… ” Banta’s eyes narrowed strategically, “…your entire plate of samosas.”
Santa gasped in genuine, profound horror.
“Not the samosas!”
“Yes, the samosas!” Banta said.
“And then you!”
“But for the price of one plate of samosas, we can fix it.”
He pulled a small, L-shaped metal bracket from his bag.
“We just anchor this shelf to the wall with two of these.”
“It’s a ten-minute job.”
“That’s retrofitting.”
He then walked over to the kitchen.
“These cabinets?”
“We put a simple child-proof latch on them.”
“Now, your plates won’t fly out and become missiles.”
“The TV?”
“We secure it with a strap.”
“That’s it.”
“That is the first step.”
“It is the modern version of the timber-laced traditional Koti-Banal construction of our own mountains.”
“It’s about adding flexibility and anchoring.”
Santa was beginning to understand.
“So… retrofitting is just… anchoring my stuff?”
“It’s the first and most important step,” Banta confirmed.
“The second is demanding the government create a National Retrofitting Fund to help people strengthen their old buildings.”
“The third is to have a ‘SURVIVAL KIT‘ ready with a torch, water, and first-aid.”
“And the fourth,” Banta said, his eyes now firm, “is to practice the drill.”
“Right now.”
“But my samosas will get cold!” Santa wailed.
“The samosas are the motivation!”
“Now, DROP!” Banta commanded.
With a groan, Santa dropped to the floor.
“COVER!” Santa awkwardly shuffled under the heavy, sturdy dining table, which Banta had identified as the safest spot.
“HOLD ON!” Santa grabbed the table leg, looking utterly ridiculous.
“I feel like a fool.”
“You look like a survivor,” Banta said, joining him.
“Because the lesson from Afghanistan, Turkey, and everywhere else is this: We cannot stop the quake.”
“But we can stop our buildings from killing us.”
“Prevention is not only possible; it’s the only sane choice.”
“Now, hold on tight for sixty seconds… then we can finish the samosas.”
Retrofitting is the Solution
The vast majority of vulnerable buildings don’t need to be demolished; they can be made safe through seismic retrofitting. This can be as simple as anchoring furniture or as complex as strengthening the foundation.
Low-Cost Fixes Have High Impact
Many life-saving measures are cheap and easy to implement. Securing heavy furniture, TVs, and water heaters with simple brackets or straps can prevent the majority of injuries and deaths in a moderate quake.
Demand Policy Action
Individual action is crucial, but systemic change is necessary. Citizens must advocate for government action, like a National Retrofitting Fund, subsidies, and tax breaks, to make it financially possible for everyone to strengthen their homes.
Preparedness is a Multi-Step Plan
A complete plan includes: 1) Retrofitting your home, 2) Practicing “Drop, Cover, Hold On” drills, and 3) Having a “Survival Kit” (Emergency Kit) ready.
Traditional Wisdom is Resilient
The story links modern retrofitting to traditional, quake-resilient architecture like Koti-Banal and Dhajji-Dewari, showing that the principle of flexible, well-anchored construction has been known for centuries.
