As they approach the sharp, blind curve, Santa instinctively slows down his scooter, joins his hands, and bows his head slightly.
Banta does the same.
At the very apex of the curve, a small, brightly painted Mandir has been built, dedicated to the highly revered local deity – Saim Jyu.
A small memorial stone next to it lists the names of a few people who lost their lives there years ago.
After they pass safely, Santa says, “It’s remarkable, Banta.”
“Since the villagers built this Mandir here, the number of accidents at this Andha Mod has dropped to almost zero.”
“Our Saim Jyu is truly watching over this spot now.”
“He certainly is, Santa,” Banta agrees.
“But he is working in a very clever way.”
“He is working through our own Shraddha and our own Bhay.”
“How so?” Santa asks.
“Think about it,” Banta explains.
“The government could have put up a small, boring signboard here saying Dangerous Curve Ahead, and many impatient drivers might have ignored it.”
“Instead, we have this Mandir.”
“And that too of our own Saim Jyu.”
“What does every single driver, believer or not, do when they see a Mandir on the road?”
“They slow down, out of respect.”
“They become more alert.”
“The Mandir acts as a powerful, psychological speed breaker that works far better than any painted strip on the road.”
He then gestures towards the memorial stone.
“And that stone… that is not just a sad list of names.”
“It is a silent storyteller.”
“It tells every driver who passes, This road is not a game. It has claimed lives. Drive with care, so your name is not added to this stone.”
“It turns a dangerous spot into a place of remembrance and caution.”
“It reminds us of the risk in a way that no government warning ever could.”
Santa is amazed by the simple brilliance of it all.
“So, the Mandir uses our Shraddha to make us slow down, and the memorial uses our Bhay of a similar fate to make us careful?”
“Banta, this is Disaster Management of the Soul!”
Banta smiles. “It is, Santa.”
“It’s the community’s own wisdom at work.”
“When faced with a recurring danger like this accident-prone spot, and perhaps slow action from the authorities on improving the road, the people used their own cultural tools – Shraddha and remembrance – to create a highly effective, low-cost, and self-enforcing safety system.”
“They put a Devta at the blind curve, and in doing so, they have saved countless lives.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- परम्परागत व सांस्कृतिक सुरक्षा प्रतीकों को मान्यता / Recognise Cultural Tools: समाज के द्वारा हमेशा से ही आपदाओं की रोकथाम व उनके प्रभावों को कम करने के उद्देश्य से कुछ ना कुछ उपाय किये जाते रहे है, और हमारा दायित्व हैं कि हम इनके महत्त्व को स्वीकारें, इनका सम्मान करें / Acknowledge and respect traditional and cultural practices (like roadside shrines or memorials at accident sites) as valid, community-driven DRR mechanisms.
- मनोवैज्ञानिक सुरक्षा उपाय / Psychological Safety Measures: हमारे लिये यह समझना जरूरी हैं कि यह परम्परागत व सांस्कृतिक प्रतीक असल में मनोवैज्ञानिक सुरक्षा उपाय हैं, और यह सड़क किनारे हमारे द्वारा प्रायः लगाये जाने वाले सुरक्षा निर्देश पट्टिकाओं से कहीं ज्यादा प्रभावी हैं – यह बेहतर रूप से वाहन चालकों को सावधान रहने का संदेश देते और मनोवैज्ञानिक गति अवरोधक का काम करते हैं / Understand that these cultural symbols often function as highly effective “psychological speed breakers” and cautionary reminders, influencing driver behaviour in ways that official signage cannot.
- समाज द्वारा की जा रही कोशिशों को प्रोत्साहन / Support Community Initiatives: अन्धविश्वास का लेबल लगा कर इन परम्परागत व सांस्कृतिक उपायों या प्रतीकों को एक सिरे से नकारने के स्थान पर, हम हमें इन्हे समाज की प्रतिरोध्यता के प्रतीक के रूप में स्वीकारते हुवे, औपचारिक सड़क सुरक्षा उपायों में सम्मिलित करना चाहिये / Rather than dismissing them as superstition, authorities can support and integrate these local initiatives into their broader road safety strategies, recognising them as valuable expressions of community resilience.

Very interesting,
We can learn a lot from our traditions.
Several risk reduction measures are lying under our traditions and beliefs.
Nicely commnicated by Shanta and Banta, this treditional efforts is one more necessary step to develop an understanding, atleast not to repeat the unsafe act and behaviour responsible for many road accident।
