Dark clouds have gathered with alarming speed. The wind is howling, and the first heavy drops of rain have begun to fall.
Santa is in a frenzy.
“The angry cloud is here, Banta!”
“The Pehalwan river will be awake soon!”
“What do we do?”
“Where do we run?”
“Every man for himself!” He starts trying to drag a heavy trunk towards the door.
Banta walks over and calmly places a hand on his shoulder.
“Stop, Santa. Stop.”
“Panic is a blind guide.”
“It will lead you nowhere but into more trouble.”
“Our strength now lies not in our panicked muscles, but in our Aankhein Aasman Par, Aur Kaan Zameen Par.”
“What does that mean?” Santa asks, breathless.
“It means,” Banta explains, “that our first line of defence is not a wall of stone, but a wall of information.”
“The Aankhein Aasman Par are the weather satellites and the scientists who give us early warnings.”
“Young Raju, the Pradhan‘s son, just got an alert on his phone from the disaster management office saying, heavy rainfall expected around our village in the next three hours, river levels may rise.”
“That is our first, precious gift – time.”
He continues, “Aur Kaan Zameen Par are our own community’s preparedness.”
“Remember the evacuation plan we practiced?”
“Remember the safe assembly point at the upper school ground?”
“Remember the volunteers assigned to help our oldest residents, like Heera Mausi?”
“Remember the siren system connected to the stream level recorder upstream?”
“This is the moment when all that boring training, those useless drills, become the most important thing in the world.”
Banta’s calm voice steadies Santa.
“This is a non-structural defence, Santa.”
“It doesn’t stop the flood, but it prepares us to face it with discipline and order.”
“Knowing when the danger is coming, where to go, and who to help – that saves more lives than the highest concrete wall.”
“It’s about being smarter, more organized, and more connected as a community.”
Santa stops his frantic activity. He takes a deep breath.
“You’re right, Banta.”
“My panic was useless.”
“The warning has come.”
“I know the safe route.”
“I should be checking on my elderly neighbour, not just dragging my own trunk.”
“The real Raksha is in our planning and our unity.”
“Now you are speaking the language of a true survivor, Santa,” Banta says with a proud smile.
“Let us act on our plan, with calm heads and steady hands.”
