In an attempt to lift the somber mood, Santa found a travel documentary about the Yamunotri Yatra on YouTube and played it on his phone. The screen filled with breathtaking, yet unnerving, visuals.
The drone shots showed a long, unbroken line of humanity snaking along a path that seemed precariously etched into the side of a massive, scree-laden mountain.
Close-ups revealed the faces of the pilgrims – a mixture of pure devotion and sheer physical exhaustion.
Their slow, shuffling feet navigated a path slick with mud and mule dung.
In this dense, single file were also hardworking mules, their ribs showing under heavy loads, and porters, some impossibly old, carrying huge backpacks or even other people in palanquins.
The most chaotic shots were when a returning stream of pilgrims and mules tried to squeeze past those ascending, forcing people to press themselves dangerously against the rock face or teeter near the valley edge.
Santa, trying to find humour, let out a chuckle.
“Banta, look!”
“It’s an exact copy of the chaos in Paltan Bazaar on a Sunday, right before Diwali!”
“Remember that time we were stuck for an hour near the clock tower?”
“People pushing, scooters trying to squeeze through, everyone shouting.”
“It’s the great Himalayan traffic jam!”
Banta watched the screen, not with amusement, but with a deep, professional concern.
He let Santa’s comment hang in the air for a moment before he spoke, his voice calm but heavy.
“You’ve made a brilliant comparison, Santa.”
“And in doing so, you’ve stumbled upon the most terrifying part of our ignorance.”
“Terrifying?”
“I thought it was funny!”
“It’s just a bit of a squeeze!”
“Is it?” Banta asked quietly.
He took the phone from Santa and paused the video on a close-up of an elderly woman in a sari and slippers, struggling for footing.
“Tell me, Santa.”
“In Paltan Bazar, does the ‘road’ you’re standing on ever decide to slide a thousand feet into a raging river?”
“When you get tired in Paltan Bazar, are you already at 10,000 feet, your lungs burning for oxygen, your legs shaking from a two-day trek?”
“If you get crushed and break a rib in Paltan Bazar, is the nearest emergency room a ten-hour ordeal away, and that too only if a helicopter can fly?”
“Did you see those women in saris and chappals?”
“Are those the right gear for this ‘traffic jam‘?”
He gave the phone back to Santa.
“We are managing a high-altitude, high-risk, bidirectional, multi-species human traffic jam on a crumbling, slippery path during monsoon season, with the casual indifference of a traffic cop in a Sunday market.”
“We are treating a life-and-death situation in one of the world’s most fragile environments as a simple logistics problem.”
“That’s not a traffic jam, Santa.”
“That’s a catastrophic failure of imagination, and it’s a pressure cooker waiting to explode.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- समझ / Discover: वर्तमान में हमारे द्वारा की जाने वाली यात्रा की तैयारियां मुख्यतः यात्रियों के पंजीकरण व यात्रियों की सुविधा से जुड़ी विभिन्न व्यवस्थाओ के लिये तैनात किये जाने वाले अधिकारियो व कार्मिको की संख्या तक ही सीमित हो कर रह जाती है / Current preparations often focus heavily on logistical metrics like registration numbers, and deployment counts of staff and facilities.
- विज्ञान / Science: भीड़ में व्यक्तियों की सुरक्षा संख्या से कहीं ज्यादा भीड़ के बहाव, घनत्व तथा गति के प्रबन्धन पर निर्भर करती हैं। भीड़ के बहाव व घनत्व की जानकारी के आभाव में मात्र व्यक्तियों की संख्या का ज्ञान सच में किसी काम का नहीं है / Crowd safety is not about static numbers but about managing dynamic flow, density, and speed. Knowing how many people are in a system is useless without the ability to control how they move through it.
- चिंतन / Reflect: यात्रियों की संख्या का निर्धारण तथा उन्हें दी जाने सुविधाओं से जुड़ी विभिन्न व्यवस्थाओ करने का अति उत्साह, हमें (भगदड़ के लिये उत्तरदायी) भीड़ प्रबन्धन तथा भीड़ की मनोदशा व व्यवहार तथा गति विज्ञान से जुड़े मूलभूत पक्षों की अनदेखी के बावजूद सुरक्षा का छद्म आभास करा सकता है / An over-emphasis on counting and logistics can create a false sense of security while ignoring the fundamental principles of crowd dynamics, which is the actual cause of stampedes.
- उत्तरदायित्व / Responsibility: सच कहें तो प्राधिकारियों को मात्र यात्रियों की संख्या का निर्धारण करने से कहीं ज्यादा अपना ध्यान सक्रिय रूप से सतत निगरानी, गति व घनत्व नियंत्रण तथा आवश्यकताओं के प्रबन्धन के आधार पर भीड़ की गति के प्रबन्धन पर केन्द्रित करना चाहिये / Authorities must shift their primary focus from merely counting people to actively managing their movement through systems like real-time monitoring, flow control, and demand management.
