The Buffalo’s Strike and the ‘Kichad’ Spa

Santa was in his backyard, looking defeated.

His prize buffalo, Billu, was refusing to move, refusing to eat, and was looking at Santa with a gaze that said, “I’m moving to Switzerland.”

“Banta, it’s a mutiny!” Santa cried.

“Billu has gone on a hunger strike.”

“I tried to give her some hay, but she just sighed and blew bubbles in her water trough.”

“I even tried to put my sunglasses on her, but she kicked them into the neighbour’s yard!”

Banta arrived with a hose and a large bag of  gur.

“Santa, the buffalo isn’t on strike; she’s in Heat Distress.”

“Animals feel the ‘Tandoor‘ weather even more than we do.”

“Their bodies are heavy, and they can’t sweat like us to cool down.”

“So what do I do?” Santa asked.

“Buy her an air cooler?”

“She’ll just eat the straw pads!”

“No,” Banta said, turning on the hose.

“We create a ‘Kichad‘ Spa.”

“Buffaloes need to wallow.”

“The ‘Kichad‘ stays cool and protects their skin from the sun.”

“And look at this shed—it’s made of tin!”

“It’s acting like a ‘Tandoor‘.”

“We need to cover it with thatch or a green net.”

Santa started splashing water to make a mud pit.

“A spa for Billu?”

“I haven’t even been to a spa myself!”

“Resilience starts with our animals, Santa,” Banta reminded him.

“If Billu gets a heat stroke, your milk production hits zero.”

“Add some salt and gur to her water.”

“It’s a natural electrolyte.”

“And never, ever graze her between 11 AM and 5 PM.”

“Let her rest in the shade of that Banyan tree.”

Santa watched Billu happily flop into the new mud pit.

“You know, Banta… she looks so comfortable, I’m thinking of joining her.”

“Move over, Billu!”

“Make room for Santa!”

• छाया और आश्रय / Shelter Management:
  • पशुओं के छप्पर के लिए टिन की छतों का उपयोग न करें। घास-फूस या हरे जाल का उपयोग करें और भीषण गर्मी के दौरान पशुओं को कीचड़ या पानी में रहने दें / Avoid tin roofs for animal sheds. Use thatch or green nets and allow animals to wallow in mud or water during peak heat.
