Santa had decided to become a local hero.
He had cleared out his garage, put a single massive block of ice in the center, and hung a sign that said: “SANTA’S VIP THANDA-GHAR (COOL ROOM). ENTRY: 20 RUPEES.”
Banta walked by and saw a line of sweaty neighbours looking confused.
“Santa, what is this?”
“A VIP club for penguins?”
“It’s a community cooling center, Banta!”
“An innovation!” Santa beamed.
“I’m providing a service!”
“Ten minutes in front of the ice block for the price of a samosa!”
Banta walked inside. It was slightly cooler, but the air was humid and stuffy.
“Santa, you’ve closed all the windows!”
“This isn’t a cooling center; it’s a steam room.”
“And charging people?”
“This is the time for Community Solidarity, not a startup!”
Santa’s face fell.
“But I bought the ice!”
“Listen,” Banta said, opening the windows to create a cross-breeze and hanging wet jute bags over them.
“A real ‘Cooling Room’ needs ventilation.”
“The wet bags act as a natural desert cooler.”
“And more importantly, have you checked on Thakur Tau next door?”
“He lives alone, and his fan broke yesterday.”
Santa looked ashamed.
“I… I thought he was just being quiet.”
“During a heatwave, quiet is dangerous,” Banta said.
“High heat affects the elderly’s heart and brain quickly.”
“We need to turn this ‘VIP lounge’ into a free Community Hub.”
“Bring the neighbourhood elders here, give them Chhaj, and make sure they are hydrated.”
“Resilience isn’t about one man with an ice block; it’s about a whole street looking after each other.”
Santa tore down the “20 Rupees” sign.
“You’re right, Banta.”
“ Thakur Tau!”
“Get your glass!”
“The Samosas are on me, and the ‘Thanda-Ghar’ is free for all!”
