The “Drunken” Trees and the Hidden Leak

Santa was trying to “straighten” a small peach tree on his terrace that was leaning toward the valley.

He had tied a rope to it and was pulling with all his might.

“Banta, help me!”

“This tree has started drinking too much local cider.”

“Every week it leans more.”

“I think the mountain is trying to push it off!”

Banta looked at the ground.

It wasn’t just the tree; there were small, hair-thin cracks in the soil, and the stone wall below was bulging.

“Santa, the tree isn’t drunk.”

“The ground it’s standing on is starting to ‘creep.’”

“You’ve been letting your kitchen wastewater drain directly into the slope for years.”

“You’ve changed the ‘drainage parameter’ of this mountain.”

“It’s just a little water, Banta!”

“The mountain is huge, surely it can handle a few buckets of soapy water?”

“It’s not just the water, Santa,” Banta explained.

“Landslides are a complex cocktail.”

“You’ve got the geology, the steep slope, and now you’ve added ‘anthropogenic’ lubrication.”

“Once that instability is infused, the landslide becomes a recurring guest.”

“You’re turning a ‘stable’ slope into a ‘chronic’ landslide zone.”

“If we don’t map these ‘creeps’ now through proper fieldwork, the next heavy rain will turn your peach orchard into a mudflow.”

Santa let go of the rope.

“So pulling the tree won’t help?”

“Santa,” Banta said, “if the mountain wants to move, your rope will just go with it.”

“We need to fix the drainage, not the tree’s posture!”
