After a recent mild tremor that rattled the region, Santa and Banta are walking in the hills.
They notice some fresh plaster cracks on a few newer concrete houses built on the terraced slopes in the valley.
Higher up, they approach a very old, small stone shrine, almost blending into the hillside, built directly on a large, exposed slab of bedrock.
It stands serene and untouched, as it has for centuries.
“It’s a miracle, Banta!” Santa exclaims, looking at the shrine.
“Every time the earth groans, even a little, those new houses down there get some new ailment.”
“But this little shrine, built by unknown hands so long ago, doesn’t even seem to notice!”
“The stones haven’t shifted even an inch.”
“It must be guarded by powerful deities.”
Banta smiles.
“The blessings of the divine are surely here, Santa.”
“But our ancestors also coupled their faith with immense practical wisdom.”
“Look closely at where this shrine is built.”
“It’s not just on the mountain; it’s virtually part of it.”
He points to the base of the shrine.
“See?”
“The builders found this massive, solid Dal or the bedrock – and they anchored the shrine directly onto it.”
“They didn’t dig into loose soil or build on piled-up earth.”
“What difference does that make?” Santa asks.
“A huge difference, especially when the earth shakes,” Banta explains.
“Solid bedrock is the most stable foundation you can have.”
“It’s like the mountain‘s own skeleton.”
“When earthquake waves travel, they pass through this bedrock more uniformly.”
“A structure built directly on it moves with the mountain, as one solid piece.”
“There’s less chance of ‘alag-alag hilana‘ or the ground beneath settling unevenly, which often causes cracks and damage to houses built on softer, deeper soil or fill material.”
He continues, “Imagine standing on a large, flat, solid rock versus standing on a pile of sand when someone shakes the ground.”
“On the rock, you’d feel the shake, but you’d likely remain stable.”
“On the sand, you’d wobble, and the sand itself might shift beneath your feet.”
“Our ancestors understood this.”
“When bedrock was available, they made it the very soul of their foundation.”
“This shrine isn’t just on a foundation; the bedrock is its ultimate foundation.”
Santa touches the cool, unyielding rock beneath the shrine.
“So, the builders were wise enough to find the mountain‘s strongest bone and build upon it.”
“They weren’t just placing stones; they were merging their creation with the oldest strength of the earth itself.”
“Precisely, Santa,” Banta affirms.
“It was a mark of their deep respect for, and understanding of, the site.”
“They knew that the best way to withstand the earth’s occasional anger was to be in complete solidarity with its most steadfast parts.”
“That’s why this old shrine has seen countless seasons and numerous tremors, and still stands as a testament to their profound, site-specific engineering.”
