Santa was sitting inside his colourful tourist jeep parked on a narrow, single-lane mountain ledge-road near Kainchi Dham.
He had rolled down his window, playing loud music, and was chatting with other drivers.
The line of vehicles behind him was a solid, motionless metal snake stretching across ten kilometers of Kumaon‘s winding curves.
Banta walked up the road, carrying a first-aid kit and a stopwatch.
He pointed to a small village ambulance tucked three kilometers back in the gridlock, its siren wailing desperately but completely drowned out by the tourist car horns.
“Oye Banta, what a beautiful weather to relax on the road!” Santa chuckled, leaning out.
“We’ve been sitting here for exactly five hours!”
“It’s the perfect time to make new friends, share samosas, and enjoy the cool mountain air.”
“Slow and steady wins the race!”
Banta clicked his stopwatch, looking highly stressed.
“Your five-hour relaxation is a medical emergency, Santa!”
“You think this gridlock is a fun vacation picnic, but you have actively cut off the main lifelines of our mountain community!”
“Oye Banta!”
“Hill roads are narrow, everyone knows there are traffic delays during summer!”
“It’s normal!” Santa grumbled, honking his horn.
“A six-hour delay on a steep, unstable cliff isn’t normal, Santa—it is a catastrophic risk!” Banta shouted.
“These narrow ledge-roads were designed for limited local transit.”
“When undisciplined tourists park randomly along the bends of Jageshwar, Chitai, or Kainchi Dham, they create a complete traffic paralysis!”
“A simple 30-minute local commute expands into a gruelling six-hour deadlock.”
“Think about the local families: students are missing university exams, employees are being fired for delays, and worst of all, critical emergency vehicles are completely trapped!”
“In these high terrains, the nearest multi-specialty hospital is often several hours away.”
“By choking the roads with unorderly parking and pulling connections to bypass traffic rules, tourists are turning our highways into a structural danger zone!”
“If a major landslide or earthquake triggers a sequence right now, how will our emergency teams coordinate a rescue when the entire valley is blocked by parked cars?”
Santa looked back at the trapped ambulance, its flashing red lights reflecting off his side mirror, his casual smile disappearing.
“Oye… so my parked holiday vehicle is actually a roadblock for someone’s life?”
“Exactly, Santa-ji,” Banta said.
“True travel responsibility means parking only in designated zones, strictly respecting local traffic protocols, and keeping the right-of-way absolutely clear for those who call these mountains their home.”

- संकीर्ण पर्वतीय मार्गों पर जाम का खतरा / The Vulnerability of Ledge-Road Gridlocks:
- संकरे पहाड़ी रास्तों पर पर्यटकों द्वारा की जाने वाली अनियंत्रित पार्किंग यातायात को पूरी तरह ठप कर देती है। यह आपदा के समय जीवन रक्षक एम्बुलेंसों और राहत दलों के मार्ग को अवरुद्ध कर गंभीर मानवीय संकट पैदा करता है / Narrow high-altitude ledge-roads are vulnerable to complete traffic paralysis under high volume. Undisciplined tourist parking chokes critical transit channels, delaying emergency medical response and disrupting local socio-economic lifelines.
- आपातकालीन निकासी मार्गों का संरक्षण / Preserving Right-of-Way Emergency Corridors:
- पर्वतीय मार्गों पर आपातकालीन वाहनों के लिए मार्ग (right-of-way) को हमेशा खाली रखना आवश्यक है। प्रशासन द्वारा नो-पार्किंग नियमों का उल्लंघन करने वाले वाहनों पर तत्काल दंडात्मक कार्रवाई की जानी चाहिए / Mountain transit corridors must maintain strict, non-negotiable right-of-way zones. Municipal authorities must enforce severe penalties for roadside parking along high-risk alignments to preserve evacuation capability.
