Santa is looking at the loose debris gathering on his field with a surprisingly cheerful expression.
“Look at that, Banta!” he says as Banta walks up.
“The Thekedar up there is so generous!”
“With every scoop of his JCB, he sends down a little gift of free topsoil and gravel for me!”
“Saves me the effort of getting soil from elsewhere to level my field.”
“It’s like the mountain itself is blessing me with fertility!”
Banta looks at the fresh, unconsolidated pile of muck resting precariously on Santa’s terrace, and then up at the raw, bleeding mountainside.
He shakes his head with a grave smile.
“Santa, my friend,” he says, “I fear this is not a Vardaan from the mountain, but an unwanted gift from the Thekedar‘s carelessness.”
“It’s a gift that might come with a very heavy price tag later.”
“Price tag?”
“It’s free!” Santa retorts, patting the loose soil with his foot.
“Is it?” Banta asks, his voice serious.
“Think of it this way.”
“That Thekedar has just thrown his garbage into your courtyard.”
“This loose debris has smothered the good grass that held your terrace together.”
“It has damaged the small trees.”
“And worst of all, it has added immense, unsupported weight to the edge of your terrace.”
He continues, “Now, imagine the first heavy monsoon downpour.”
“All this loose soil will turn into a thick, heavy Kheer.”
“It could trigger a small landslide right here, taking a big chunk of your precious farmland with it.”
“And where will it all go?”
“Straight into the village Gadhera below, choking it, and adding to the fury of the flash flood that will threaten the houses downstream.”
Santa’s cheerful face falls.
“You mean this free soil is actually a future landslide just waiting for a drink of water?”
“Precisely,” Banta affirms.
“And this is just your field.”
“Imagine tons and tons of this Malba being dumped all along the valley.”
“It initiates new landslides where none existed before.”
“It pollutes our springs.”
“It silts up our rivers and dams.”
“The Thekedar saves some money by not transporting the debris to a safe dumping yard, but he hands over the bill for future disasters to all of us living downslope.”
“It’s the most expensive free gift we could ever receive.”
Santa looks at the pile of debris with newfound horror.
“An unwanted gift indeed!”
“It’s like someone giving you a free goat but telling you later that you also have to feed its entire hungry family for the rest of your life!”
“I will go and have a word with that Thekedar right now!”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- पहाड़ो के कटाव से उत्पन्न होने वाले मलबे का ढाल पर असुरक्षित निस्तारण मानव जनित भू-स्खलन तथा पर्यावरणीय क्षति का एक प्रमुख कारण है / The improper disposal of excavated debris by rolling it downslope is a primary cause of new, human-induced landslides and environmental damage.
- इससे नदी – नालो में गाद की मात्रा खतरनाक रूप से बढ़ती है, जलाशयों की जल संचय क्षमता तथा उत्पादक अवधि में कमी आती है और त्वरित बाढ़ की भीषणता में वृद्धि होती है / This practice critically increases the sediment load in rivers, exacerbating the destructiveness of flash floods and reducing the lifespan of reservoirs.
- हिमालयी क्षेत्र में किसी भी प्रकार उत्पन्न होने वाले मलबे का सुरक्षित निस्तारण यहाँ होने वाले अवसंरचना विकास कार्यो की एक अनिवार्य शर्त होनी चाहिये / Strict implementation and monitoring of scientific debris disposal at designated sites must be a non-negotiable part of all road construction contracts in the Himalayas.
