Santa was sitting comfortably under the shade of a neem tree on his farm in Barnala, Punjab, listening to the loud, rhythmic chug-chug of his massive 15-horsepower agricultural tube well.
A thick gush of crystal-clear groundwater was flooding his field, transforming his paddy crop into a makeshift lake.
Banta walked up the dirt path, carrying a heavy iron measuring tape and a long, thin rope.
He looked at the water roaring out of the pipe and then down into the deep borehole.
“Oye, Santa-ji! Congratulations!” Banta yelled over the noise of the pump.
“You have built yourself a private water park!”
“But tell me, how deep did your drilling rig have to go this time to strike gold?”
Santa waved his hand airily.
“Banta, don’t ask!”
“Last month the old well dried up completely, so I had to call the boring machine again.”
“We went down a full 25 meters deeper than last year!”
“It cost a packet to lower the heavy submersible assembly, but what do I care?”
“The electricity is 100% free!”
“The government pays the power bill, and my tube well runs 24 hours a day.”
“It’s like a non-stop free drinks party!”
Banta tied a stone to his rope and dropped it down an adjacent observation borehole.
It unrolled endlessly before hitting a dry, hollow thud.
He looked at his marked knots.
“Santa-ji, you think you are at a ‘free drinks party,’ but you are actually stealing from your own children’s piggy bank.”
“Across Punjab and Haryana, our stage of groundwater development has shot past 150%!”
“That means for every one liter of water nature puts back into the earth, we are aggressively sucking out an un-sustainable one and a half liters!”
“But the electricity is free, Banta!”
“Why should I limit my pumping?” Santa argued.
“The electricity might be free, Santa, but the water table isn’t!” Banta said, showing him the dry tip of the rope.
“Between 2000 and 2019, the average water table in Punjab crashed down by nearly 9 meters.”
“In hotspots like right here in Barnala, it has plunged by over 20 meters!”
“We are losing half a meter to a full meter of water depth every single year.”
“Because we insist on growing water-guzzling paddy in a dry season using millions of unregulated tube wells, we are forcing the aquifers to go completely dry.”
“Soon, your heavy pump won’t yield a drop, your pumping costs will skyrocket to lower the pipes again, and your fields will crack.”
“The party is ending, Santa, and the hangover is going to ruin the entire village!”
Santa looked at the massive gush of water, then down at the deep, dark well hole.
“Oye… so ‘free power’ is just an invitation to dig my own grave deeper?”
“Precisely,” Banta sighed.
“If we don’t start measuring the water we use, our Green Revolution heartland will turn into a grey desert before your son takes over the farm.”
