A crowd has gathered around Mohan’s new house.
It was a model earthquake-safe house, but after last night’s tremor, ugly X-shaped cracks are visible on its plaster walls.
Mohan is close to tears, and Santa is shaking his head in dismay.
“It’s all a lie, Banta!”
“A hoax!” Santa declares loudly as Banta joins the crowd.
“We were all told this design was safe!”
“Look at Mohan’s house!”
“It’s full of cracks!”
“The technology failed!”
“We have all been cheated!”
“We might as well go back to building our old way!”
The crowd murmurs in agreement, their faith shattered.
Banta raises a hand for calm.
“Bhaiyo, Bahno, let’s take a moment and look again, but with different eyes,” he says, his voice steady and clear.
“What do we see here?”
“Do we see a pile of rubble where a house once stood?”
“Do we see a collapsed roof?”
“No.”
“We see a house that is wounded, yes, but is still standing proudly on its feet.”
“We see Mohan and his entire family standing here with us, safe and sound.”
“Is this failure, or is this a profound success?”
The crowd falls silent, confused by Banta’s perspective.
“Think of it like this,” Banta continues.
“When two great wrestlers fight, they absorb tremendous blows.”
“Their bodies get bruised, maybe they bleed a little.”
“But they remain standing.”
“These cracks you see on Mohan’s house are like the bruises on a brave wrestler who has just fought a mighty battle with the earthquake‘s energy.”
“These special walls, with their reinforced frame, are designed to take the punishment.”
“They crack in specific ways to dissipate the earthquake’s violent energy, so that the main columns and beams, the skeleton of the house, remain safe.”
He points to the X-shaped cracks.
“An engineer once told me these kinds of cracks show that the wall has done its job perfectly.”
“It has sacrificed itself to save the main frame from collapsing.”
“It took the blow so that Mohan’s family could walk out unharmed.”
“This house did not fail, my friends.”
“This house performed its sacred duty.”
“It chose to be wounded, so its family could live.”
Mohan, who was looking at his cracked walls with despair, now looks at them with a glimmer of gratitude.
Santa is stunned.
“So… the cracks are like… battle scars?”
“A sign of victory, not defeat?”
“Exactly, Santa!” Banta affirms.
“The true failure would have been a sudden, silent collapse with no warning, trapping everyone inside.”
“This house spoke loudly of the danger, it groaned and cracked, but it did not let go of its people.”
“This is the real success of earthquake-safe design.”
“We must learn to read these signs not as failures of the technology, but as proof of its life-saving promise.”
“The goal is to save families, not just to save the plaster on the walls.”
The crowd looks at Mohan’s house differently now.
The fear and anger are replaced by a quiet respect for the wounded warrior that kept its family safe.
