Santa was celebrating. His apple crop had been a “bumper” success, and to show it off, he had built a massive, four-story Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) mansion on the very edge of his sloping orchard.
It had marble floors, a heavy stone roof, and even a concrete fountain in the shape of an apple.
“Banta! Look at my ‘Apple Palace‘!” Santa boasted.
“It’s so heavy and strong, even a hurricane couldn’t move it!”
Banta stood at the base of the slope, looking up.
He noticed fresh cracks in the soil near the foundation and a stone retaining wall that was bulging like a balloon.
“Santa, your house is indeed very strong.”
“The problem is, the mountain it’s sitting on is very weak.”
“You’ve put a 500-ton ‘RCC Hat‘ on a head made of wet mud.”
“Hat?”
“Banta, it’s a foundation!”
“It’s a weight, Santa!” Banta countered.
“This slope is already ‘creeping‘—it moves an inch every year.”
“By building this heavy RCC structure, you’ve added a massive Surcharge Load.”
“It’s like putting a heavy backpack on a man who is already slipping on ice.”
“And look at your septic tank—it’s leaking right into the slope!”
Santa looked at his front door.
“Wait… did I use a level?”
“The door feels… tilted.”
“The door isn’t tilted, Santa; the whole mountain is shifting under the weight,” Banta warned.
“Traditionally, we built with wood and stone – Kath-Kuni and Koti-Banal – because it was light and flexible.”
“But this RCC monster is too rigid.”
“When the ground moves, RCC doesn’t bend—it snaps.”
“You should have built a light, steel-framed structure or stayed with traditional designs.”
“If this ‘Apple Palace‘ starts walking, it won’t stop until it reaches the river!”
