The Cannon on the Slope and the Infrastructure Overload

Santa was working as a supervisor for a new luxury hill-view highway project.

The massive excavators were cutting deep into the mountain, generating mountains of blasted rock and loose soil.

To save time and keep the project moving fast, Santa directed the dump trucks to pull up to the edge of the cliff and tip the waste directly over the side.

“Look at that, Banta!” Santa laughed, watching the debris cascade down the gorge like a grey waterfall.

“Out of sight, out of mind!”

“The mountain is vast; it has plenty of room at the bottom.”

“We are saving lakhs on transport costs, and our highway will be ready before schedule!”

Banta ran to the edge, looking down with a face full of absolute dread.

The loose material had piled up on the steep incline below, resting precariously right above a small, cluster of village houses nestled in the valley.

“Santa-ji, you aren’t just dumping waste,” Banta shouted over the roar of the machinery.

“You are loading a massive, gravity-powered water cannon, aiming it directly at the village below, and handing the trigger to the monsoon!”

“Cannon?”

“Banta, this is just loose dirt and gravel!”

“It will just sit there quietly with the rest of the mountain‘s natural rubble,” Santa argued.

“Natural rubble accumulates slowly over centuries, Santa,” Banta countered.

“But you are adding thousands of tons of completely loose, uncompacted engineering debris onto a slope that is already fragile.”

“Rising global temperatures mean localized cloudbursts are becoming our new normal.”

“When an intense rain event hits this pile, the water won’t just flow over it; it will saturate this entire loose mass, liquefy it instantly, and turn it into a high-density, high-velocity debris flow.”

“Pure water is bad, but a debris slurry is a battering ram that will obliterate those houses in seconds.”

“True development means factoring the cost of Engineered Disposal Sites into the project budget, not dumping our shortcuts onto the lives of the people below!”

Santa watched a final dumper empty its load, the loose rocks rattling ominously as they settled on the edge.

“So… my shortcut is actually their shortcut to a disaster?”

“Yes, Santa,” Banta said quietly.

“If we don’t manage our construction waste, the mountain will return it to us with interest.”
