Santa was standing at the entrance of a densely packed, informal residential colony in Delhi’s Govindpuri area.
He had just constructed a new iron extended balcony for his residential building, which stretched over the road, almost touching the balcony of the house across the street.
The narrow lane below was blocked by parked scooters, a large garbage dump, and hanging bundles of hundreds of illegal internet cables.
“Look at this beautiful community vibe, Banta!” Santa laughed, pointing down the tight alleyway.
“Every inch of space is utilized!”
“We don’t waste land on wide roads like those planners in the capital.”
“Here, everything is within hand’s reach!”
Banta arrived, holding a large red bucket and a stopwatch.
He pointed down the lane to where a small garbage pile had caught fire from a discarded beedi, sending grey smoke billowing up toward Santa’s extended balcony.
“Santa-ji, you think you’ve built a cozy neighbourhood, but you’ve actually built an industrial-scale fire conveyor belt,” Banta said, clicking his stopwatch.
“If a major domestic gas cylinder explosion happens inside this block, how do you expect a standard city fire tender truck to reach your doorstep?”
“Oye Banta!”
“The fire station is just three kilometers away on the main highway!”
“They have big red trucks with long water pipes.”
“They can spray water from a distance!” Santa shrugged.
“The trucks can’t fly over your illegal balconies, you stubborn optimizer!” Banta shouted.
“The recent Govindpuri residential building fire that killed 3 innocent citizens proved the exact same point: narrow lanes and illegal horizontal encroachments prevent emergency fire services from achieving critical entry.”
“Our informal settlements and dense chawls are packed with high fuel loads—plastic sheets, exposed wiring, and poorly stored LPG cylinders.”
“When a fire breaks out, the spread is instantaneous due to the lack of structural firebreaks, and the response time drops to zero because the rescue vehicle is stuck three streets away behind a wall of parked scooters!”
“We need to move past this passive ‘Chalta hai’ attitude and implement localized community-led preparedness initiatives like the global Firewise framework!”
Santa watched a local motorbike struggle to pass through the narrow lane below, looking at the hanging mass of internet cables.
“Oye… so my extended balcony is actually an obstacle for my own rescue?”
“Yes, Santa,” Banta said.
“True resilience begins when the community volunteers to clear the lanes, maintain neighbourhood fire safety committees, and keep basic smoke alarms and water points ready before the sirens start wailing in vain.”
