Santa was standing on his large farm in a highly water-stressed block, proudly watching an array of high-powered flooding channels drown a massive field of thick, water-guzzling sugarcane stalks.
He was holding an official agricultural subsidy check from the local cooperative bank.
“Oye Banta, look at my harvest!” Santa beamed, patting a sugarcane stalk.
“It gives me a guaranteed financial return, the electricity for my heavy water pump is subsidized, and the water flows non-stop!”
“I am farming my way to prosperity!”
Banta walked up the wet furrow, holding a water-metering device and a pack of drought-resistant millet seeds.
He pointed down at the muddy field where the water was simply evaporating under the dry heat waves.
“Santa-ji, you are cultivating cash today, but you are planting an absolute agricultural bankruptcy for tomorrow,” Banta said seriously.
“You are growing an ultra-water-intensive crop in an overexploited aquifer zone just because the water is free!”
“Oye Banta!”

“Why should I plant boring millets that consume less water?” Santa argued, pocketing his check.
“Because the water table under your boots has dropped by 15 meters, Santa!” Banta countered, showing him the regional aquifer report.
