Santa was standing in the middle of his living room, wearing a thick, quilted winter jacket lined with frozen packets of green peas and holding a portable fan in each hand.
He looked like an astronaut who had accidentally landed in a vegetable market.
“Oye, Banta!” Santa yelled, the ice packets clinking as he moved.
“Check out my ‘Space-Age Personal Cooling System’!”
“If the government won’t give me electricity for the AC, I’ll become my own refrigerator!”
Banta walked in, carrying a bucket of white reflective paint and a long-handled brush.
He stopped, staring at Santa’s pea-jacket.
“Santa-ji, you aren’t an astronaut; you’re a human Aloo-Matar curry.”
“By the time you reach the market, those peas will be boiled, and you’ll be steamed!”
“Then what do I do?” Santa pouted, a frozen pea packet sliding down his sleeve.
“The house is so hot I saw a cockroach carrying a tiny fan earlier!”
“The problem is your roof, Santa,” Banta said, pointing upward.
“It’s dark concrete.”
“It’s absorbing 90% of the sun’s radiation and radiating it back at you like a grill.”
“We need a ‘Cool Roof’.”
“Cool roof?”
“You mean we put sunglasses on the house?”
“No, you simpleton,” Banta laughed.
“We paint the roof with this high-albedo white paint.”
“It reflects the sunlight back into space.”
“It can lower your indoor temperature by 3 to 5 degrees.”
“It’s like putting a ‘Sun-Block’ on the whole building!”
“And take off that jacket—you’re trapping your own body heat inside.”
“Wear this loose, white cotton kurta instead.”
Santa looked at the paint bucket.
“Will it work as well as the peas?”
“Better,” Banta replied.
“The peas are for eating, Santa.”
“If we finish by noon, I’ll buy you a glass of Lassi that’s actually cold, not pea–flavored!”
