The morning sun was already hitting like a heavy-duty spotlight by 8:00 AM.
Santa was sitting in his courtyard, frantically fanning himself with a newspaper, looking like he’d just finished a marathon in a sauna.
“Oye, Banta!”
Santa yelled, wiping his brow with a soaked handkerchief.
“Have you seen this report?”
“They say 2026 is going to be the fourth year in a row to hit record temperatures.”
“I feel like the whole of Doon valley has been turned into a giant Tandoor, and I’m the Paneer Tikka!”
Banta walked in, looking surprisingly composed, carrying a clay pot of cool water and a small spray bottle.
“Santa-ji, it’s not just the Tandoor effect.”
“The IMD is predicting more ‘above-normal’ heatwave days this season.”
“But the real danger isn’t just the afternoon sun anymore—it’s the ‘Warm Night’ phenomenon.”
Santa paused his fanning.
“Warm nights?”
“Banta, nights are supposed to be for sleeping and dreaming about chole bhature, not for melting into the mattress!”
“Why is the moon acting like a heater?”
“It’s the Urban Heat Island effect, Santa,” Banta explained, spraying a fine mist of water near the windows.
“All this concrete and tar we’ve paved over the Doon Valley absorbs heat all day.”
“At night, while the villages cool down, the city ‘breathes’ that heat back out.”
“It means your body never gets a chance to recover.”
“It’s like trying to cool a car engine while the garage is on fire!”
Santa looked horrified.
“No recovery?”
“That’s why I woke up feeling like a squeezed lemon!”
“I even tried sleeping in front of the fridge, but my wife said I was ‘blocking the butter’ and kicked me out.” Banta chuckled.
“Resilience isn’t about sleeping with the butter, Santa.”
“It’s about ‘Water Bells’ and ‘Cooling Shifts.’”
“In Telangana, they started ‘water bells’ in schools—a bell that rings just to remind kids to drink.”
“And in Odisha, they’ve moved office hours to the morning.”
“We need a ‘Heat Action Plan‘ for this house!”
“A plan?”
“I have a plan!” Santa declared, standing up.
“I’ll buy a Bluetooth-controlled, solar-powered umbrella that follows me around!”
“And what if it malfunctions and hits you in the head?” Banta retorted.
“Listen, the real plan is simple:
1. The 12-to-4 Lockout: No heavy work during peak hours.
2. The Cotton Commandment: Wear loose, light-colored clothes.
3. The Hydration Huddle: Drink even if you aren’t thirsty.
4. The Neighbour Watch: Check on the elderly. If they seem confused or their skin is hot and dry, that’s a Heat Stroke emergency.”
“You’re right, Banta.”
“I’ll check on Chacha-ji next door.”
“But first, can we install one of those ‘Water Bells’ in our kitchen?”
“But instead of a bell, can it play a Bhangra beat?”
“It’s hard to stay hydrated without a little rhythm!”
Banta smiled, handing him a glass of Aam Panna.
“Whatever keeps you drinking, Santa.”
“Just remember: in 2026, the coolest person is the one who’s prepared, not the one with the fanciest gadget.”
Hydration is Non-Negotiable
Drink water frequently even if not thirsty
• शरीर में नमक की पूर्ति के लिए ओआरएस (ORS), नींबू पानी या छाछ का सेवन करें / Use ORS, lemon water, or buttermilk to replenish salts
Respect the Peak Hours
Avoid going outdoors or doing strenuous activity between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
Monitor Warm Night Stress
रात की गर्मी शरीर को ठीक होने से रोकती है / If nights are hot, use damp curtains or fans to lower indoor temperatures. High nighttime heat prevents the body from recovering.
Recognize Heat Stroke
तुरंत चिकित्सा सहायता लें / Symptoms include high body temperature, confusion, or fainting. Seek medical help immediately.
