They were back in their village, sitting and watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and purple.
But for once, Santa was not relaxed.
His mind was churning with everything Banta had told him — about loose debris, foolish development, unheard warnings, and forgotten terraces.
He felt a sense of dread, but also a flicker of resolve.
“Banta,” he said, turning to his friend with a serious expression.
“I am tired of just feeling scared or sad.”
“If I were the Pradhan of our village, right now, today… what would we do?”
“No more big theories.”
“Tell me the first five practical steps we would take to make our village safer, based on everything you’ve taught me.”
Banta looked at Santa, a proud smile spreading across his face.
This was the moment he had been waiting for. Santa had moved from passive listening to a desire for action.
“An excellent question, Pradhan-ji,” Banta said with a respectful nod.
“Here is your plan.”
“First, we stop being ignorant.”
“We invite an expert from the Geological Survey of India, not to give a lecture, but to walk with us through the village.”
“We ask them to explain the official Hazard Map in simple words, pointing to the exact slopes that are dangerous and why.”
“We demand Local Context.”
“Second, we Learn to Listen.”
“We create a small team of our village youth, our Mountain Sentinels.”
“We train them to spot the Whispers of the Mountain — the tilting trees, the new cracks, the strange springs.”
“We empower them to contact the district Emergency Operations Centre to report these things immediately and seek guidance, as also information.”
“We build our own early warning system.”
“Third, we make a real plan.”
“We walk together and identify two safe escape routes away from the main landslide path.”
“We designate the Primary School, which is on stable ground, as our safe place.”
“And we practice an Evacuation Drill once every three months, so even the children know what to do without panicking.”
“It must become instinctive.”
“Fourth, we respect our elders’ wisdom.”
“We get the old maps and talk to the oldest people in the village to document where landslides have happened in the past.”
“We integrate this invaluable Traditional Knowledge with the GSI‘s map to create our own, super-accurate village Risk Map.”
“And fifth,” Banta concluded, his voice ringing with conviction, “we tackle the ATIL problem.”
“We identify the most dangerous abandoned terraces above our village.”
“We pass a resolution in the Gram Sabha and go together to the BDO Office, demanding that the retaining walls be repaired under MGNREGA.”
“We tell them it’s not just employment; it’s Proactive Disaster Prevention.”
Santa stood up, his chest puffed out, a determined glint in his eye.
The Plan was Clear, it was Practical, and it was Theirs.
He no longer felt like a Victim in Waiting, but the potential Master of his Village’s Resilient Destiny.

यह समस्यायें प्रायः समुदाय द्वारा तैयार व क्रियान्वित की गयी सरल व व्यवहारिक कार्यो की श्रंखला के द्वारा सहज ही हो जाता हैं / The solution to complex problems doesn’t always lie in large, top-down government schemes, but in a series of simple, practical, and community-owned actions.
