The local leader is thundering from a small stage. “…and for the security of our motherland, our brave soldiers must be able to reach the border in hours, not days!”
“We need wider, all-weather strategic highways!”
“A strong nation needs strong roads!” The crowd, including Santa, applauds loudly.
Later, Santa is still fired up. “Did you hear that, Banta?”
“He’s absolutely right!”
“Our army needs the best roads!”
“Anyone who questions this widening is questioning our nation’s security!”
Banta waits for Santa’s patriotic fervour to simmer down.
“Santa,” he says calmly, “no one questions the need to support our brave Jawans.”
“But let me ask you a question.”
“If you are preparing for a fight, would you sharpen your sword, or would you set a big, clumsy trap for your own feet right outside your door?”
“A trap for my own feet?”
“Of course not!”
“That’s just stupid!” Santa retorts.
“Well,” Banta continues, “sometimes, when we build these super-wide highways by making massive, vertical cuts into our geologically fragile and monsoon–drenched mountains, we are, in effect, setting a trap for our own army.”
“Every time we blast the hillside, every time we dump the debris carelessly down the slope, we are creating a landslide-in-waiting.”
“What do you mean?” Santa asks.
“Imagine a critical situation at the border.”
“Our army needs to move men and supplies urgently.”
“And just then, the heavy monsoon rains begin, as they often do during the tense summer months.”
“What happens to those steep, raw, freshly cut slopes we created for our wide road?”
“They give way.”
“A massive landslide, born from our own construction, blocks our strategic highway completely.”
The road, which was supposed to be our strength, becomes our biggest weakness.”
“It traps our forces far more effectively than any enemy ever could!”
Santa looks horrified.
“You mean our own road could defeat us?”
“It can, and it does, every monsoon,” Banta says grimly.
“We see it all the time.”
“A reliable, well-maintained road that respects the mountain‘s contours, even if slightly slower, is a far greater strategic asset than a super-wide highway that has a high chance of vanishing under a mountain of its own making right when we need it most.”
“True strategic thinking is about reliability and sustainability, not just about width and speed.”
“We must not let our road to victory become a self-made trap.“
Santa falls silent, the politician’s fiery words replaced by Banta’s chillingly logical ones.
“A trap for our own feet… Banta, you’ve given me a very unsettling thought.”
“A road that fights for you is better than a road you have to fight with.”

संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- हिमालयी क्षेत्र में वस्तुस्थिति का सही व सटीक आंकलन किये बिना किये गये सड़क निर्माण में ढाल को काटा जाता है जिससे भू – स्खलनों की सम्भावना बढ़ती है और इस से सामरिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण अवधि में विभिन्न करने से अवरुद्ध होने के कारण यह स्वयं ही एक बोझ बन सकती है / Inappropriately designed roads involving extensive slope cutting can increase landslide frequency, becoming liabilities that block access during critical times (e.g., monsoons, security emergencies).
- चौड़ाई व गति के विपरीत, सच्ची सामरिक बढ़त सड़को की हर मौसम में यातायात हेतु सुलभ बने rah की विश्वसनीयता से मिलती है / True strategic advantage lies in the reliability and all-weather sustainability of a road network, not just in its width or speed.
- सामरिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण अवसंरचना विकास में दीर्घकालिक जोखिमों के साथ ही पर्यावरण के लिये विनाशकारी निर्माण के रख – रखाव के व्यय को भी संज्ञान में लिया जाना चाहिये / The long-term risks and maintenance costs associated with ecologically disruptive construction must be key considerations in strategic infrastructure planning.
