
Santa was sitting outside his mountain hut at night, listening to a series of sharp cracks echoing from the high ridges above.
“Oye Banta!”
“Listen to that!”
“The mountain is celebrating something!”
“It’s letting off crackers in the middle of the night!”
Banta adjusted his muffler and looked up at the moonlit peaks.
“Those aren’t crackers, Santa-ji.”
“That’s the sound of the mountain being slowly dismantled by a ‘Frost Army.’”
“It’s the 9% rule in action.”
“9%?”
“Is that a discount on apples?” Santa asked, hopefully.
“No,” Banta laughed.
“It’s physics.”
“During the day, water seeps into the tiny fractures of the rock.”
“At night, when the temperature drops, that water freezes into ice.”
“And when water becomes ice, it expands by 9%.”
“It’s like putting a soda bottle in the freezer; eventually, the cap pops or the bottle bursts.”
“That expansion is strong enough to rip solid rock apart.”
Santa looked at the high cliffs.
“So the mountain is… popping its own caps?”
“Exactly,” Banta said.
“This broken rock mass—the debris—doesn’t vanish.”
“It slowly trickles down and accumulates on the slopes.”
“Over years, it builds up into a massive pile of loose junk, often hidden under pretty green grass and trees.”
“People think it’s a solid hill, but it‘s really just a pile of ‘frozen crackers‘ waiting for a rainstorm to turn them into a mudflow.”
Santa grabbed his flashlight.
“So, the green grass is just a fancy blanket covering a pile of broken glass?”
“You’re learning, Santa,” Banta nodded.
“If we don’t map that ‘broken glass’, our hazard maps are just pretty pictures that ignore the real threat.”
